The Ballad of Pearl Harbor

Just sitting there mighty
The ships and the people.
Flying American
Flags and the eagle.
Just sitting in harbor
That Sunday morn,
Oblivious to battle
And coming forlorn.

Drinking their coffee
And eating their breakfast
Things were going
Right along with their wishes
When suddenly a soldier
Did speak up and say,
"They're some blips on the radar
And they're coming our way!"

Then the officer said
"Now look here you see,
They're our boys coming home
In their B-17's.
So don't get all worked up,
No excitement today,
So get back to working
And resting and play!"

Now planes flying by
Were soon to be heard
But a shout soon went up
"Hey! Those are not our birds!"
Explosions to follow
Soon filled the sky
Now stand up and fight,
Or lay down and die

Guns fired back,
The battle was on,
But pretty soon after
The battleships were gone!
They were stuck in the harbor
With no way out,
And smoke's hanging over
The harbor in clouds

A valiant defensive
The defenders put forth
Desperately trying to
Even the score,
But their goals completed
The enemy turned back
Leaving behind them
Devastation and black

Many men died
On that fateful day
But a little luck came
The American's way!
Their carriers were still,
Far out at sea,
And part of the battle
They never did be!

Pearl Harbor will live on
In infamy
Stories of those who died
To keep their land free!
Their ultimate sacrifice
Helped the whole world to see
That America's the land
Of the brave and the free!

A Misplaced Loyalty

Into the street the dog ran on
Heedless of the warning calls
Running through the silent morn
The dog failed to hear the horn
As he chased his favorite ball
He took his final breath that dawn

A sight of horror the boy could not
Stand to watch it through the end
The dog he knew failed in his goal
The ball now resting by a pole
Away away around the bend
The car drove on and did not stop

The boy was left alone to ponder
Why the dog would take the chance
And heed no warning nor a call
For he was loyal to his ball
But now he's off with death to dance
And leave us all alone to wonder

The Chickadee

Outside the house the chickadee
Is calling out to me
Flitting in and out of trees
Living life so free
God's creation for you and me
An example for us to see
To show that it alone is He
It's Him who's made us free

Mallard

Feathers so plenty
Floating on the lakes surface
A Mallard so fair

Megastorm In Memory of Hurricane Sandy

A mighty force lurks out of sight
Far out o'er the sea
About to bring a monstrous fight
Like none we've ever seen

The time winds by and on the air
The wind is first to show
It starts out as a breeze so fair
But endless is it's flow

It picks up strength and close behind
The waves march up in force
Starting small but larger still
They crash upon the shore

Sheets of rain pour in and bring
Lightning with thunder booms
The storm is here its clouded rings
Over the city looms

Stretching vastly north to south
It surges on full steam
A powerful force within its clouds
To flood the streets and streams

Abandoned towns lie in the path
As well as cities large
A war upon this nation hath
This storm declared its charge

It turns the day to black like night
Invades the cities holds
Upon the shore it bears its might
Reshapes it in the cold

Boardwalks fall into the waves
Their hungry mouths want more
It gouges harbors into caves
And floods the lower floors

The rains join in and now they lay
To waste the country land
Two northern storms join in to play
Snow is now at hand

Lakes are formed in valleys low
Where cattle used to graze
While higher spots are cold with snow
The world all in a haze

Hours pass and now the storm
Its strength starting to fade
A hope is seen and human forms
In streets now start to wade

A mighty cry goes up at last
The storm moves on its way
The time has come and now alas
The cleanup will take days

Surviving souls will always see
This storm in their minds eye
Though the hardest times are yet to be
The sun shines in the sky

A nation rises up to save
And help life start anew
For we are all one and the same
The red the white and blue

On Smoking a Pipe

A wispy finger tickles the air
But a breath exhaled
Chases it away
All that remains now
A sweet scent in the air
And now it's time
For another puff
On the pipe

Death of Today

A movement of air
In the night
Barely perceptible
To the sight

A whisper of air
The days' final breath
For the clock is ticking
The days' coming death

Last minutes fade
Till the day is history
Its death soon to come
Nevermore shall this day be

Dazzling colored sky
An awe inspiring vision
