The soul's forever—
As an eternal spirit.
Leaves this mortal coil . . .

Jars

We took mason jars
and poked small holes in their lids;
then went out into
those long hot summer nights as
childhood flickered around us.

We couldn’t hold youth
any more than we could keep
caught fireflies alive,
and our once bright lights are now
dimming in the jar of life.

Faith In God Makes A Difference

                                            Commitments are hard
Time is swift and life is short
                                              Misfortunes happen
Faith in God makes a difference
                                         Times will pass much easier

The Spirit Prevails

It is a new day
Something wonderful happened
You are now at peace
Like a phoenix rising up
From the ashes you prevail

We shall not mourn you
For you are not gone at all
We may not see you
Your presence lives on in us
Enduring the test of time

Radiant light shines
Upon us all forever
Glorious rays gleam
Emitting from your spirit
Keeping your memory strong

The lives you have touched
Will never forget you now
Though we may shed tears
These are tears of happiness
Your spirit forever reigns

In the days to come
When we are all together
Celebrating life
Your spirit will consume us
Your peace will be our strength

Joy and happiness
Will be felt every moment
You gave us reason
To have faith in the future
Your legacy will live on…………..

Moonbeam Visit

moon cradle swings slow
cloud curtains billow softly
starry night lights blink
amidst black velvet blanket...
as wind croons a lullaby

dreamy dust settles
sparkling against silken strands
as moonbeam peeks through

Sandman plants a sweet dream's kiss--
slumbering beauty breathes deep

Bright Geen Land

Up the rolling hills As much green as one can see Meeting with blue sky As colors swirl together Beauty expressed with its heart The greatest green grass Displaying color outside On the brightest fields A gorgeous feel about it A love on the ground below The hills move around Where the sky fills, up above A cyan blue shown Mixed perfectly with the green Of the wondrous grass pronounced The greenery here In this harmonious land Brightens the dreary A happy day is brought forth From this delightful green place

Inner Struggle

Inner Struggle

is it the stars
on a cloak of midnight blue
or the moon beams
dancing through the canopy
that eases reality’s view?

the reflection
in the window pane
begs answer
for it’s tears, not rain,
that stream on the glass

silent cascades
bare the resistance
of approval
prayerfully awaiting
the dawning acceptance

Castle In The Sand

Castle In The Sand

Waves besiege the shore
As crashing long lost lovers--
Lonely lions roar--
Salty cling of sultry air
Glistens as sunlight weakens...

Latte-coloured sand
Reveals waving fiddler crab
The male--his Huge hand--
Tempting females to his lair,
His deep castle in the sand.

~by deborah burch©
5/14/2012

*Note: the fiddler crab
they mate every two weeks...the male stands outside his two-foot deep elaborate burrow in the sand (castle) and waves his very enlarged claw enticing all females who pass by...when one shows interest, she stops for a second or two...stares at him...and he goes in to his castle, comes out and repeats this a few times until she makes up her mind....lol...once he has convinced a female, he seals the door to his castle, and there they stay...well, for a while...lol...db

THE ABSENT YEARS

THE ABSENT YEARS

life becomes so sweet
so precious life to the eye
life in all its forms –
the rock strewn stream bubbles life
even those worn-round pebbles

a silver fish drowned
soaked to death in my shower
strange how sad i felt
after watching it struggle
after offering nothing

like mixed emotions
when i tangle spider’s web
the tiny worker
tiny artist full of life
and i so full of myself

death now seems all round
and i only half alive
in my absent years
floating down that rock-strewn stream
drowned silver fish, sad spider

then hope will follow life through,
                                                 making life complete,
                                              the driving force is loving

PEACE - (triple tanka)

I'd like to believe
Peace is a natural state
That war is foreign
But I see war after war
And brother slaying brother

Old sacrifice young
Our youth gone before their day
Then I want to cry
For thought that they gain nothing
Are lost through their innocence

What a wonder youth
How pliable and pristine
They want but to shine
While all the burnt-out old men
Pull the strings from their armchairs

'Space and Time'

Space and time, matter,
energy, gravity, light,--
the laws of physics,
both known and unknown, and we
are children of the Big Bang.

Into the night sky
I gaze, awed by space and time
and the wide expanse
of the Milky Way, a dot
among endless galaxies.

Through this soup and stew
of space and time, dark matter,
and dark energy
they spin and swirl and collide,
filling this big universe!

Our own Milky Way
formed from this vast space and time
and sprouted our Earth,
this blue orb circling the Sun,--
the cradle of all known life.

Space and time, matter,
energy, gravity, light,--
the laws of physics,
both known and unknown, and we
are children of this Cosmos.

The crowd is untrue,

The Importance of Seeds

Life begin with seeds
It can protect the whole world
Can hold our future
So take care of our nature
Don’t cut trees for selfish greed

People suffer much
From natural disasters
Because of the seeds
They didn’t give importance
Destroying our mother earth

It’s not too late friends
Plants seeds for your country’s sake
Be the one to prove
That you care your family
Because of the seeds of life

Mirror Reflection

There as I’m standing I sure see my reflection In a cold mirror On the wall across the way As light cascades down on it It does seem as though Stark and harsh in appearance The rugged mirror Pulls life in, pulsates some out A semblance of what it sees A gorgeous image If there is something pretty That presents itself In line with the great mirror Then life sees beauty as well We desire to see Life with a beautiful base Want for perfection I see me in the mirror So what do I make of it… What is it I truly see?

Crying is Every Hurt

She cries tears of pain The heartache he left for her Tears that turn to blood By the hurt that she now feels Nothing is worse than this pain She doesn’t feel now No other understanding Comes to her hurt mind She’s corrupted by horror Listlessness of her being There are streaks of tears The pain enveloped within Her heart beats outside Her cold life lies meaningless Darkness is all that she sees Her heart feels nothing She lies staring at the wall The tears do not feel They are empty, meaningless They just are there, falling down Tears represent pain The passion of hopelessness But while on their own They are nothing and empty But crying is every hurt

Time Won't Wait

Awake, I lay still, Waiting day, under review. Tempted to fall back Asleep, and hold the day at bay. I rise instead. Time won't wait. I gather my thoughts Over coffee freshly brewed. A strategy formed, To accomplish what I must. I move on out. Time won't wait. At end of day's length, Assessing successes strong. Smart to prepare first. Then to put legs on my plans. I rest a bit. Time won't wait. The children come play. Suspending all that is mine, About cherished time. Smiles and laughter reminding, I choose to love. Time won't wait!

Three Davids I have Known

David the First In an old photo I’m being bathed by a boy looking quite bashful. . . the first young man to hold me - my mother’s only brother. David Bunker My first love note came from junior high’s smartest guy - shy freckled David, future doctor of acclaim. For one month I had his heart. David Williams Our poet at Soup - like the one of Bible times whose psalms soothed a king - touches us with modern verse and blesses us with friendship. (As I went to enter the contest, I noticed I was supposed to write of only one famous David. Well, I don't know the famous ones like i know these three. In a way, my middle one is famous. I just googled him and saw he was on the short list of nominations for a prestigioius award naming most honorary of all students who ever graduated from my high school! and of course, our own David Williams is famous at SOUP!!)

His Last Wish

Draped in twilight's veil that December afternoon was slipping past him; how he wished to pause time once in the twilight of his life. A late waking up; standing on the edge of life with his muffled voice he prayed for a reversal of the time and of his life. Glimpses of childhood, mother's lap as his pillow, colourful days' call, how he wanted all those back just for once, in this twilight. © kash poet ===============000===============

AUTUMN'S SPLENDORS

   Summer's dress is gone
   Darken the colors for warmth.
   Crops now in harvest,
leaves come tumbling down to earth...
   Indian Summer is here.

   Cold days, colder nights
   Fireplace sings its wooden song.
   Cords stacked in rows,
   sentinel woods wait outside...
Snuggling up with one you love.

   Night comes on too fast
The big yellow moon stands out.
   Vees of geese fly south
against the gray sky of day...
Time to change the clocks, again.

   Holiday spirits!
   Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins abound.
   Children seek rewards
   going to houses unknown...
"Trick or Treat" is the password.

   How I love this time
Knowing that year's end is nigh.
   Give thanks to the Lord
   for His generous nature...
   All seen in Autumn's splendor!

After Dusk

Dusk has descended. Lights put on their sparkle show around the valley. All daily chores behind me, I’m engulfed by sweet relief. Night drops quietude. My house absorbs the silence. Shadows come creeping. I embrace the solitude, for I will wield a poet’s pen. As my muse whispers, I see two pairs of eyes that watch me placidly. I scribble thoughts and at times. . . . pause to pet my lovely cats. For PD's Anything Goes Contest

Poem 2

Where is the light that lived within,
Why has the flame of doubt appeared.
The trees bend slightly in the wind
Towards darkness, now have you veered.

Focus on the things dear to you,
Where is the light that lived within.
Your day will come before it's through,
You that have, not died, with sin.

Deep in your soul, you seek therein
The pleasures, that should not have been.
Where is the light that lived within.
Questions of how this came and when

How long have you abandoned life
What have you done, where have you been,
Will you choose to remain in strife
Where is the light, that lived within.

Huddled as one

Tanka version:

inaudible words

weeping warm, sweet tears of joy

Woman and her Vines

They grew all over In the sunlight they progressed The vines became her And she was one with the vines The sunshine brought life to them She held docile vines Growing like weeds onto her She was very free Green and nude she went along Becoming just like the vines She didn’t know much Where the vines came from that day They appeared at once After she fell asleep then In the warm light of the sun It seems that vines love The cute essence of the sun And the heat she has Then they grew on her, beaming Becomes that of her being Now she is attached Firmly planted on the ground With nutrients there Pumping juice through living Earth And the sunshine’s energy Now she loves the vines And she can still write poems She writes on nature Something she now knows about By sunshine is she able

Halloween Haunted House

There’s an old mansion On top of an eerie hill Where path runs crooked And candles are lit inside Where ghosts triumphantly float The place exudes hate An evil holds firm within Manor feels desperate Bats gloat of their great catches And black cats find their mice here The place warns of fear By Jack-O-Lanterns hither Lit with dark presence They guard the cemetery That envelopes the front porch No trick or treaters Come by this mansion at night For even the devil Avoids the creepiness here Pain and suffering present Spiders live nearby Capturing the larger prey Trees are dead, spooky Set off fear beyond the grave A Halloween haunted house

Silly, is it not?

Not to criticize.
But to fall in love again

A Time of Magic

There was once a time When magic was truly real And he had a force A large legion of black cats They followed by his side They licked their black paws Desired to be with him They loved his powers For he was a great enchanter Weaver of magic intense He was powerful With his group of cats with him No one messed with him He could vanquish anyone And make them miserable But as time went on Magic was leaving this Earth All save for one charm Love could conquer any spell And it brought him to his knees He lost his spell craft And the cats spread all about The skies all turned blue And feelings of hope returned Love had beat out old magic

HOUSE CLEANING

HOUSE CLEANING

climb the attic stairs
and inhale the dust of years
poor forgotten room
with its sea of ancient gold
items too dear to be sold

how long has it been?
must be nearly fifty years
strange how time flies by
oh how dark this room has got
must replace that 40 watt

hardly space to move
between the sheet covered piles
as tripping I go
wondering where to begin
i brush items up to my chin

eerily disguised
like white cemetery stones
what a dismal sight
my mind goes racing outside
where a summer sun shines bright

now a rat runs by
quite safe from my downstairs cat
I must stop to think
this stuff aint so dang nifty
give it another fifty

Warlock's Ploy

Warlock stands atop Entire world, splashing hatred Into each person That ever hopes in getting Ahead in this world of death Where the plush is gone Hope is ever elusive And the spider weaves His daring web of deceit Luring the lost inside it Warlock laughs at us Thinking us to be lost souls Without the darkness That he so envelopes in His dark soul, eaten distraught Now the warlock preys He looks towards the missing The lost ones inside And he converts them into The deepest darkest minions Servants of his craft Do his bidding whenever He desires them to He tries to get as many People under his hate spell He will try to spin The web of disillusion So people may think He is something that he’s not To one day rule this planet

LITTLE PEOPLE II

 LITTLE PEOPLE II

if you look closely
at the forest of deep green
for a few seconds
you might see little glints
tiny eyes between the leaves

they live to chatter
high-pitched voices barely sound
when mixed with the breeze
and this all for the good
oh what malicious cursing!

some think they are cute
these miniature woodsmen
but like smallest folk
they are petty quarrelsome
and hate everything big

Flight - for Metamorph Contest

	Flight (Original poem)

	It’s morning
	early on when
	I begin to sparkle,
	dance,
	ignite.
	I radiate,
	burn bright,
	reach high and grasp,
	talk fast and loud,
	create chaos,
	risk all to
	fly
	(flying is the best part).

	Flight (Tanka)

	Morning, early on.
	I dance, radiate, burn bright,
	chaos in my grasp.
I’ll chance my manic madness —
	anything so I can fly.

Fear is A Prison

                                                  Fear is a prison -
Unseen chains bind you from truth,
                                               Removing freedom,
                                    Shackling your future, your dreams,
                                          Holding your life in bondage.

                                                Fear is a roadblock -
                                        Blocking you from your desires,
                                                Torturing your soul,
                                           Stifling your creative juices,
                                      Holding you back from greatness.

Fear is not from God -
He can break fear's grip on you,
                                              He can loose your chains.
Freedom is yours, if you'll ask.
Fear need not be your master.

SEPTEMBER TANKA

SEPTEMBER SONG - triple tanka

Like a lover's sigh
She tiptoes forth looking back -
Those warm memories -
Birds still singing cross over
And sad sunshine stills the wind

Now September sings
A sympathetic tune silvers
Promises late gold -
The change will be gradual -
Promises sleep painless sleep

Mysterious calm
Like a magic caesura
Bated by surprise
In mind it's ever the same
Such gentle looking forward

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
HAPPY HAPPY TIME - double tanka

Happy happy time
Early tears and sleep lifted
Once past Labor Day
Harlequin in falll colors
Trips so lightly o'er the world

Echoes sad voices
From the past are silenced
By the happy clown
Bacchus come down pours the wine
The whole world on color dines

Moonlight Dream

I always said that i came alive at night
The same time the moon shined
I always felt powerful and strong
Doing everything possibly wrong
I remember seeing a girl walking the streets
Yellow ribbon dress running from me
I tried telling her not to worry
But she started screaming
I snatched her up and shook her
stopped the screaming
stopped her breathing
Moonlight Dream

I awoke to the sound of sirens
Covered in blood that surrounded
My mother asked me why i did it
Confused by the second
I ran far away in an instant
Went a far distance
A village on the horizon
Near the Appalachian Mountains
I pleaded for help
No one seems to listen
They run

I run and run
Now out of breath
Figured out what was wrong
Can't take another step
I fall asleep on the ground
Listen to the wolves howl
I close my eyes and dream
Another dream
Another dream
Moonlight Dream

I always said that I came alive at night
The same time the moon shined
This time I saw a couple dining
I stood out the window and stared
My stomach ached of hunger
I waited for hours
A few hours went by
They haven't came out
feeling so hungry
Big appettite for your blood
That fake red love
Moonlight Dream

I crash through the window where you sit
You scream
I tear your skin
Say goodbye
I almost slurp
I awoke to the sound of screams
Not sure what's going on
Had a bad dream
There's blood everywhere
I did this?
I killed them?

This is my Moonlight Dream

i am the gray stone
waiting in empty deserts
for blooming roses...
patience grows inside of me
as i search the skies old paths...

i am the dew drop
vanishing in the sun's love
into nothingness...
i was granted safe passage
into the river of life...

i am the wild flame
burning in the night's darkness
the dreams of the lost...
roads of pain and happiness
unfold to me together...

i am the warm wind
caressing the scent of trees
blossomed untimely...
i carry towards heavens
the thoughts remained unspoken...

i am your twin soul
giving myself completely
to your loving hands...
when death will veil my footsteps
you'll remain my heart keeper...

The Lonely Ace of Hearts

Dedication to my first and last love, Lance Ewens, 1979-2006

She's remembering
The day that she fell for him
It was in Autumn
When she first transfixed her eyes
Upon the most gorgeous face
That she'd ever seen
He smiled at her with a charm
That glistened so bright
It melted her heart like snow
They became friends instantly
Their friendship would grow
And thus, blossom into love
They spent every day
With each other mirthfully
Until that last fateful night
A bitter, rough wind
Stole her one true love away
Her heart always breaks
When she holds the ace of hearts
It remains a painful token
Of the love that she once had

Tanka is like a Haiku. The only real huge differences are it's syllable scheme and the fact it's
written in 5 lines. A tanka has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, 5 in the third, and
7 in the final two lines.

Passion Runs Through Us

I see you coming
And my senses burst forward
I secure your waist
With my two arms so softly
And you get closer to me

Our eyes meet with love
Special warmth that burns within
We kiss with passion
Our toes curl with excitement
We explore each other’s heart

Slowly we lie down
Getting ready for pure love
Holding each other
We softly became unclothed
Sensuously passionate

Our love heard around

All Hallows Eve

And here are the trees Spooky silver tendrils flow With webs all throughout Tangling with the branches there Where screams of fears carry on A pumpkin farmer Harvests his crop to share it The neighbors love him For his pumpkins make perfect Jack-O-Lanterns for the night And the skeletons Of the yard just lay alone Fear is their approach To life, a great interlude Shining brightly in moonlight The scarecrow scares none None of the crows that fly there Nothing frightens them But a man and his rifle Then they will leave fearfully The bats in the air Stay atop of our large tree Waiting for children To cross their paths, and scare them They fear the cats however These black cats prowl The dark night, causing great fear To the passersby The superstition reigns high And scares most people at night Ghosts do fly around The undead love to see them They play all throughout The haunted house, imposing Fear to all those kids nearby Spiders are a stay This fearful time of the year They spin their white webs Scare anyone unprepared Feelings of dire pain is near Witches play their part In the cauldron of great fear Their cackling supreme Crawls down your spine when she’s near And her skin creates disgust All these great creatures Of the darkness in the night Do bring emotion Whether fear or elation Halloween sparks interest

I searched

I searched
so hard,
trying to find
the me,
in myself

This is not Tanka it is Gogyohka, a fairly new form growing out of Tanka. I think I have the form correct, but i have not yet investigated the tone and
intricasies of the content. Keep watching for this as I think it will catch on quite quickly. The form is to take a poem about the length of a haiku and take out each mini phrase within the total phrase and arrange them in five lines. Joann Grisetti introduced it to me last week. It is kind of hard to determine if a one, two or three word group is a complete mini phrase.

Tanka is a classical Chinese poem consisting of 5 lines with a syllable count of
5/7/5/7/7. It can be traced to the 5th century. It does not rhyme and uses no
punctuation. Traditionally, the tanka begins with an observation of a natural
scene in the first 3 lines and then the non-rhyming couplet at the end reflects on
the observation.

The Spirit Prevails(Tanka Series)

It is a new day
Something wonderful happened
You are now at peace
Like a phoenix rising up
From the ashes you prevail

We shall not mourn you
For you are not gone at all
We may not see you
Your presence lives on in us
Enduring the test of time

Radiant light shines
Upon us all forever
Glorious rays gleam
Emitting from your spirit
Keeping your memory strong

The lives you have touched
Will never forget you now
Though we may shed tears
These are tears of happiness
Your spirit forever reigns

In the days to come
When we are all together
Celebrating life
Your spirit will consume us

Waiting for You in August

It’s not thirst I fear,
but the way the sun’s course sweeps
shadows, everything
flows downhill, and how I wait
rooted here without water.

Of broken wishes,
like twisted, cracked twigs once green,
we speak in whispers
hoping to graft them to limbs
gently taped, repaired, to bloom.

Salt Rings and Seaweed

Tangled seaweed shore
sharp in salt and sweet decay
Crab claws still clenched shut
in defense of losing prey
Sun, to bleach, is on it's way...

RAINDROP (TANKA)

                           FALLING FROM ABOVE,
LIKE A RAINDROP, SMALL AND MEEK,
                           ONLY TO HIT GROUND.
                     CRASHING AND SPLITTING INTO...
                         MANY PIECES, OF MYSELF.

And sacrifice the true self.

The Sower and the Tree

O thee, the sower,
who’s sowing but not reaping;
cut the tree? Why not
tend it, nor, cultivate it
near the crystal stream of love?

...that I may bear you,
the sower, who’s sowing but
not reaping, next spring
the sweet fruits, of you and me,
for the world to see---our arts.

The king of this world resides
Looking down on us

Yet, He still embraces us

We may hurt Him immensely
Yet, He never turns His back
