Monarch of Summer

I await your coming
for the flowers are blooming and the grass is high…
lilac branches still bare and shivering
in the laggard lion’s breath of March
they await your kiss, Monarch of summer.

purplish buds
sprout from gray lilac branches --
daffodils bloom

Though all the tulips are gone
having served as desert for gophers,
the worm and the grubs stir in the wet spring soil…
and the hyacinths have replaced the crocus’s blue
the paper narcissus now, scent the air.

red breasted robins
hop between hummocks of grass --
bird bathes fill with rain

From the within the green pupa, soon
you will stir ..the membrane will thin, sheer as a curtain
in a spring breeze adorned in polka dots
and wings like the crinolines of spindle legged
virgin daughters at first communion...
you will emerge with lash long antennae ready to fly.

leaves of cone flowers
push through the brown soil of spring --
anthills rise

I await your coming
for the flowers are blooming and the grass is high…
lilac branches still bare and shivering
in the laggard lion’s breath of March
they await your kiss, Monarch of summer
butterflies born.

Three days Saved

It's been nine years, I have counted the tears-
they have made trails of guilt
  worried into my heart
then filled with loneliness and bitter despair
but by your grace I have been shown...

For the first time, in these nine years, I have not wept
nor held a vigil to honor our grief
though the loss still burns, this time it is transformed

Peace from your love still reaches through death
and through your eternal love I am reborn

 It is Good Friday.
When God took your spirit home
and left me dying to know,
how to love him for his sacrifice
when he asked me to give up you?
How do I heal this death and rise with you in his arms?

Through your love I was born, and in your arms I grew
and it has been your love the kept me whole
that taught me how to be reborn
for even though your body has gone
your words lost in the wind and breath no more
The essence of grace and strength you lived
- it grows still in your daughter soul

My being and existence came from your womb
my heart and mind shaped by your enlightenment
I have lived a life you gave me and for once
I live it in pride to honor your sacrifice
your words giving me the guidance I'd lost nine years ago.

Alas, I've come to know, that as you died
and went home with our Lord, you saved me from my death
not in your dying, my grief and love can attest,
but in your living strength and loving example
you showed me how to live a life
             open to our Father's gift

We knew it would not wait, but the parting was too fast.
I sat in thought three days before your sleep and asked,
"In three days time my savior died, I wonder hence
what of my soul will rise with his?"

And now sitting Easter morning,
  holding my sons candy-filled basket,
I realized Three days passed.

He took you home Friday morn, but left me love,
that eternal love that never dies
whose comfort is unending

I honor your love by giving it to my children
and Easter morning I felt your hug, your kiss, and knew
                                 you have never left me
.
Though God took you home Mom
I know you have never left me
for as our Savior died and rose
you too still live in my heart,
showing me proof our Father's blessings

because you, my love, are my soul and all ready there
there fore I am strong enough to give this pain up
to honor his sacrifice and transcend,
to be humbled by the grace and mercy
that could forgive such lost lambs as I

The Garden

The night air is cool and collective,
Running through my hair and face.
Even when I’m with people, I feel alone
In this cold blooded space.

It’s like walking through a garden
Of all your favorite foods,
But none of which can substantiate
For that one so special mood…

That mood,
that beautiful frame of mind.
I only go there with you,
And only you can make it unwind.

I discovered a passion unlike any other
And in my finding I opened a world,
A world I did not know existed.
I’m on cloud nine every time I think of you,
Just the thought of you brings joy to my heart.

This garden holds many beautiful things
Many delightful pleasures,
Many cold nights,
Warm nights,
Difficult frights,
Ecstatic times and unsystematic times!

But they mean nothing to me,
While I’m alone…

Walk with me through this garden.

Clear Waters

The waters clear as I stand by the river

I see the reflection of someone long ago

As the storms come in I know I can't let you go.

Rain pours at times in this life you've given

But the shadows fade when my prayers have risen

Your love for me I've never new until now

When I see the waters clear, my reflection seems so near.

As time goes on I know you are near

Just seeing the way you help me stand

Just seeing the way you remove the fear

It helps my weakness seem so clear

That without you I am small

But as I take your hand, the walls get knocked down

The waters clear, the reflection I see now,

is you in me, this my Lord helps to make me free.

Distant African Nights

Those Distant African Nights...

1.

The shadows swayed in your candlelit room,

a cool breeze teasing your bare back,

streaks of lightning forked in the Johannesburg night,

as my hands stroked your hair,

kissing your soft mouth,

holding you,

ever so tight.

2.

You whispered that you loved me,

and I kept silent,

the rain fell,
shadows danced,
thunder rolled,

the breeze teased your naked back,

you whispered that you loved me,
as my lips found yours,

the rain washed over our tender nights,

lightning and candlelight,

etching poems on your burnished skin,

yet,

a fear gnawed at me,

deep within.

3.

We parted ways,
and you could never forgive me, you said,

now, after numberless thunderstorms,

the rain that falls,

echo the countless tears that I have shed.

4.

You are long gone,

far away,

happy, I pray,

yet the memories persist,

those precious moments shall never,
ever,

like the Jo'burg rains,
trickle away,

and I wish you well,
for loving me as you did,

for it was I who was not worthy,

then,

and it is I who is not worthy,

now...

5.

You were always true,

it was I who always,

always,

refused to,

to give myself,

completely to you.

Springtime Dawn

Early I came alive this spring morning,
Shorter was last night, I realize
Gone were those hours of darkness
It’s time for the novice to arise

Looked on the nature with panoramic view
Spread was the greenery around,
In the palms of picturesque mist
The season of spring could be found

Rambled alone along the street,
 Vacant was the boulevard
The silence of human kind,
Invoked in me a fanatical bard

Impaled by a ray of sun,
The universe was set to brighten
And in the universe of me,
Was set the soul to lighten

Eternal Spring

With each stone,
A certain size,
A distinct color,
Water flows gracefully
Over each backbone of the brook.

Along the brook,
The water is pristine,
Yet calm and quiet,
Rolling over stones
And pebbles, the water streams into
A natural spring.

The spring dwells
Eternal life,
Once drank,
Life everlasting.
Offering life after passing.

Queen of the Hedgerow

The absolute surprise of your face
brings joy to the Spring in snow’s place.
The royal, velveteen, purple hues
glorify the chill morning dew.

England, bonnie England, Buckinghamshire
birthed the little flower of my hearts desire.
Whether Johnny-jump-up or Pied Heart’s Ease
these colorful dickens cause nary a sneeze!

Tiny faces peek from hedgerows and bushes
making our flower beds look oh, so luscious.
A grand variety of Russian yellow or white
each and every wee monkey a rare delight.

So, to you dear Pansy I say, “Hip Hip Hurray!”
May there ne’r come a Spring you’re not on display!

The Anniversary

Every year, they celebrate with the same ritual.
This anniversary of the day they were wed.
They set up the coffee table, adorned with take out Chinese food.
They gather in the small room, sit on the floor
and then insert the video, watching it once again,
just as they did the year before, and the year before that.
This recording of a glorious day in April, l994,
when they became a family.
They were not just a couple in love,
but a trio, who took those important vows.
Filled with the love, and the promise of something brand new.
A sunny little boy, a child with blond hair and pink cheeks
was there too, being united, along with his mother.
United in love with a tall, good looking, good hearted man,... my son.
On that day, my son became a husband, he became a father.
There, years later, together, they watch the reenactment of a beautiful spring day.
They are, shining and beautiful, the three of them.
Exchanging devotion and love.
On that screen, a little boy's face glows, as does his mother's.
He holds her hand, and from his new father
he accepts a gold chain with a small ring.
Around his neck, it glitters, ...
followed by the glitter of the ring slipped onto his mother's finger.

A few little changes have taken place since that chilly spring day.
Now there is little girl, with dark curls, who watches the video with them.
She sees her mother, her father, and her brother on the screen.
She doesn't quite understand..."Where am I, Daddy?" she asks.
United in love, a family, united forever.
