Tombstone - Like The Four Horsemen

they walked along
weathered, carrying their guns;
like the four horsemen…

down to the O.K.
guns blazing, bullets flying;
smoke clears, the strong stand…

A SENRYU WORKSHOP- Please help me edit this poem - thanks

PLEASE READ FIRST:

Okay, the scene. My stepmom's funeral.

I was very upset. I was close to my 'mum,' who my father had married in his fifties, long after I was grown and on my own. Mum and I talked about everything. I knew her heart, her ways. She always took the time to do her hair, dress nicely.

She died of leukemia. From the onset of the disease until her funeral was 5 WEEKS. It was sudden and devastating. She lost all her hair except for a tuft and she would not let my father cut the matts from her last remaining lock. She wept over her looks, her swollen features, her bald head, her 'strangeness.'

I had been told by her long ago that she wanted a closed casket.

I said this to her sons.

What did they say?

Funerals are not for the dead, they are for the living!

I was fit to be tied! I was FURIOUS that her wishes were being ignored.

I had no power as the stepdaughter. Her sons insisted on an open casket. They did not buy her a wig. She was viewed with a small kerchief tied around her head, her makeup a garish, botched job. She looked nothing like the woman we loved.

I know she would have hated this. What woman wouldn't????

I was mourning, beyond upset and also furious that her wishes were ignored.

This senryu is about the look that passed between me and my stepbrothers as they saw up close what their 'arrangements' had done to a woman who had always strived to 'gussy' up for any outing. They had DISMISSED her.

So... here is my poem... does it capture this? Is there another way? How would you rewrite this?

a stranger sleeps – her open casket closes all conversation
