After Christmas 2014 - In the Moment

The time is after midnight, and I’m in the moment, thinking how another Christmas has come and gone. My spouse and I are tucked in bed, warm and cozy. Outside, white beauty coldly blankets our front lawn. Snickers, our new dog, sleeps peacefully between us. The cat creeps up beside me now. How I love her! How trusting are these creatures God gives us - how pure! Our cat lies down by Snickers. I hear her soothing purr. The visit with our daughter and her family was nice. With gifts, glad hearts and tummies full, we traveled home. More memories to cherish; the old year passes. In the moment - grateful - I finish with this poem. Above The Clouds

Above the clouds, I long to be
Among the other things I see
Where I can stand and shout out loud
Here I stand, above a cloud!

Where whispy trails of jets in flight
In blue skies, patchwork quilts of white
While here below I am, a grain of sand
As people travel from a far off land

Above the clouds on a pitch black night
The moon peeps out to share his light
The stars still seem to find a way
To dance around the cloud's display

I'm amazed at the ability of man
To send satellites soaring, like they can
Above the clouds and far beyond
Like they posses a magic wand

But, most majestic of them all
Is that snowy mountain top so tall
Where I can stand and shout out loud
Here I stand, above a cloud!

Peaches and Cream

She was looking my way, I had nothing to say,
Though I'd dreamed that this day would transpire;
With her beaux all around, why would she look at me
With such interest and playful desire?

She was heading my way, what on earth would I say
To the prettiest girl in the town?
And how could I bear all her sunshiny hair
Or her eyes, speckled golden and brown?

I thought, "This is the one! Mercy, here comes the sun!
If I stare, I shall surely be blind:
Though I be somewhat plain, if she choose to remain
I'd be last in the county to mind."

Then my eyes turned away as she sweetly did say
Pretty phrases I cannot recall;
And I mumbled replies, though they might have been lies,
Since I cannot remember at all.

Of that bright day in May but one thing I can say,
She was dressed in a soft yellow gown;
'Twas a lemony hue that was buttery too,
And with eight shiny pearls buttoned down.

Then I asked if she'd dance at the Cunningham's manse,
At the ball on the fourteenth of June;
She replied, "Oh, how good! Yes, I certainly would;
And I hope I shall talk to you soon."

What a wonderful day! Still with nothing to say
I just whistled an old happy tune;
Having primrosy dreams of sweet peaches and cream
As I counted the hours of June.

~Confusion~ The sun kisses my fresh washed cheeks It’s warming on my face The breeze rustles my just brushed hair The mist disappears, its fingers leaving a wet trace. The birds start to sing They are late it’s already past dawn The insects start to buzz On this fresh brand new morn… We are happy to awake A new day to explore New challenges we take As we exit through our door. A chance to do good or bad The choice is up to you To be happy or be sad Or spread a smile or too. The pink fingers of cloud in the east Mean red sky in the morning Will the old saying come true? Is this a shepherds warning? As the sun set in the west Only sunset just last night The red sky was at its best That should mean shepherds delight… Is it shepherds warning or is it shepherds delight? Now I am so confused, is it morning still or night? Is it going to be fine, or are storms on the way? I wish the bloody shepherds would make their minds up today.

The Face of an Angel

So many poemless years,
   Not describing your true beauty.
You’re more than an Angel,
   Here on angelic duty.

Your face echoes truth,
   Of divine radiance on earth.
Your presence warms my soul,
And gives my life its worth.

You’re the one I think about,
With an honest heart so true.
I just want to speak from my within,
And wish a happy birthday to you.

As I bring you a little closer,
   Your angelic dust disappears.
I have always wanted to whisper,
   Happy birthday in your ear.

Today is the day of reckoning,
As my lips whisper this greeting.
And praise a wonderful day,
   While in our secret meeting.

Not a meeting of lustful acts,
But a meeting of a warm embrace.
I have always been mesmerized,
When I look upon your face.

Random Thoughts 61 Mirrored Refrain

Mirrored Refrain
x represents the only lines that do not rhyme in this poem. A & B represent the refrain!

Angelic force,
draping over me, her canopy.
Unmasking the wonder of this youngster,
her spirits alive within me

You helped erect my "secret window"
Ambitiously chasing what I hunger!
Her spirits alive within me,
unmasking the wonder of this youngster!

Our poetry sessions, I sit and reminisce.
Stress free, under this willow tree
Unmasking the wonder of this youngster,
her spirits alive within me!

When depressed and blue you come through,
relax me when feeling vulgar.
Her spirits alive within me,
unmasking the wonder of this youngster!

Every verse meant to impress this poetess,
an essence of the empress I aim to please!
Unmasking the wonder of this youngster,
her spirits alive within me!

Harshest critic yet my biggest fan,
imperfections cast asunder
Her spirits alive within me,
Unmasking the wonder of this youngster

Death cannot take the gift I was given,
Unmasking the wonder of this youngster,
her spirits alive within me.

Magic Beans

These wonderful magic beans are first roasted and ground
Then brewed and served to many a coffee lovers delight
Lattes, Turkish, Macchiatos and so many, many more
But for me, regular, room for cream, always tastes just right

When the day is gray and its difficult to get out of bed
A good coffee is what you need to start you moven'
I believe its caffeine that really does the wake-up trick
And the warmth and flavor get your body grooven'

This aromatic drink has been around for many centuries
For almost all of us, enriching and enlivening our day
Just ask Starbucks, for they have found the rainbow's end
For these magic beans we are more than willing to pay

Choices To Face

I have some choices to face,
But these are not my decisions to make.
God told me what He wants me to do;
He said, "Listen, Son, I have a plan for you."

The days are rainy and the nights are blue.
My heart is crying and God is too,
But we are smiling, waiting here for you.

Wheels Rollin'

1 o'clock in the morning the alarm is loudly screamin'
I go wake up my brother who probably is still dreamin'
We jump in the car and the wheels start rollin'
Can't wait to pick up the papers and start strollin'

A smile planted on our face! The day is finally starting
The headlights shine bright! The animals are darting
Ah! Windows down breathing all the fresh air
My brother gathering papers with all of his care

Wheels steadily rollin down the road
Nothing is in sight, not even a toad!
Newspapers start soaring through the air!
Do I want this to end? No! I wouldn't dare

Starting to run out of papers as the sun is rising
Listening to the birds chirping is quite energizing!
I look over towards my brother to see if he is still awake
Bless his heart! He has fallen to sleep, he really needed a break!

I throw the last paper and I began to yawn
The paper lands perfectly on that last lawn
Wheels rollin' as we head back to the beginning
Should this much fun be considered sinning?

Wish I Knew

It was just words that we would whisper
To get us through the nights
Or dreams that came to visit us
When life just wasn't right

A comfort from being lonely
Thoughts to occupy the mind
Never really possible
It was never the right time

And after I was quiet
When the lines began to blur
You found where I was hiding
Knew right where my thoughts were

And you swooped in and won me
Took me right off of my feet
Showed me what is really out there
When two unselfish hearts meet

Showed me how to share in a moment
To be kissed without a rush
To be held onto with a passion
And be graced with your soft touch

Now you've set up camp inside of me
But you've gone so far away
So the part of you that's mixed in me
Misses the real you every day

And you took some of me with you
I'm not sure you even know
If you feel me thinking of you
Wishing you didn't have to go

Always waiting for a word from you
Hoping you're happy
Wishing you the best there is
Even if it isn't me

But somehow looking for the happy end
Hoping you miss me too
Wondering where our story leads
I really wish I knew.

One Of The Lucky Ones

Hope I'm not putting a big hex on myself But till now I've had no serious medical problems Don't know how many can say that at seventy-eight But you can place me in the “fortunate” column Haven't done anything out of the ordinary Thinking maybe I inherited some very good genes My whole family before me all lived to a ripe old age So what's this guy... a can of baked beans! Seven sisters all lived longer than eighty A pattern seems to have been established here Don't want to break the spell or cause any problems I'll just motor along and have another beer Don't think I'd like to be around at one hundred Soiling my jockey and mumbling away Just wheel me out to the back veranda in the sun And forget me for a couple of days © Jack Ellison 2014

Shhhhhhh Listen

Shhhhhhh, listen very carefully D'ya hear that happy sound The corn is high five-ing each other The rain's finally pounding down After a record hot dry summer Getting buckets of that miracle stuff The grass is giggling just like the corn Sure hope it ends up as enough Nature is quite unpredictable eh One year to the next one following We never know if it's feast or famine In self pity we're always wallowing Should know by now nothing's for sure The weather will do it's own thing The only event we can rely on each year Is that winter is followed by spring Shhhhhhh, listen very carefully D'ya hear that happy sound Mother Nature's shining down again With her shimmering golden crown © Jack Ellison 2013

Winter White

Winter White
I love the white of winter
As the snow lies on the trees
So clean and neat the landscape
But so cold the breeze.

Nothing’s ever perfect
I appreciate what’s best
It’s pretty when the snow falls
Don’t think about the rest.

I quickly grab my camera
To capture all I see
When come the snows of winter
I cannot let it be.

The white snow of winter
Covering all the ground
As far as I can see
That snow is all around.

I see patterns in the tire tracks
And ice upon the lake
What a pretty picture
All these things will make.

Children making snowballs
Throw them near and far
Looks like fun they’re having
Not at all bizarre.

Heavy coats they’re wearing
Just to keep them warm
Temperature is really down
After that big storm.

Yes, I love the white of winter
But can do without the cold.

Oh What A Relief It Is

As most days go, this one's a winner Think I'll go out and get soused After two long years hoping and praying We finally have sold our house! It wasn't a matter of price it seems Location was definitely why It took this extremely extra long time But finally a buyer came by! Advice to those who are thinking of selling Patience is definitely a must There's supposedly a buyer for every house But “For Sale” signs can start to rust! Dear Cathie and I are over the moon The relief is showing on our face Stress was getting too much to deal with To keep it a spic and span place! We can now go back to our slovenly ways With dirty dishes piled up high Mountains of clothes strewn round each room On the walls, bits of blueberry pie! Gonna miss the peace and quiet of the country Fields of green wherever you look But mostly gonna miss my best buddy Ron He'll always be number one in my book! © Jack Ellison 2013

Whatta Bozo

When it comes to modern technology The word “bozo” suits me to a “T” I quiver and shake and tremble all over When my computer asks questions of me! Think to myself “If you're so damn smart Why are you asking this old guy? I'm back in the days of peck-peck-peck On my typewriter listening to hi-fi!” I'm at an age when the brain doesn't work The way it did way back when Wait a minute, I'm not sure this old brain Was that brilliant even back then! Some of us guys were born to be techies I'm just happy being real simple Totally content in my own little world All the girls just love my dimples! I may be a bozo but I'm a happy bozo Not familiar with that techie talk Made it this far without hurting my brain Technology's a total crock! © Jack Ellison 2013

A Total Blast

I'm in one of my happy moods Don't know the reason why Sure is better than a downer mood My friends would wonder why Always try to be upbeat each day Sure can be difficult at times Some days are much more challenging There's just no reason or rhyme It's probably just mind over matter We're always the one in control If you choose to wear a dirty big smile It'll do wonders for your soul I'm sure some of you guys are saying That's easier said than done But perseverance is surely the key So stick at it, life's full of fun In troubling times try to remember All the good things you possess You'll find the dark clouds will disappear With happiness you'll soon be blessed Really don't need no fortune or fame Material things don't always last Happiness is the greatest companion Your life will be a total blast! © Jack Ellison 2013

To myself

Is it a must to be in a couple?
I find life pleasurable as a single
It gives me time to write
Time to search for my height

If it is such a must to be in a couple
Why is is that around me, I see only pain
Everything becomes always disagreeable
Love, after some time, does become a disdain!

Why, I have had my share of love
Once, when I was yet a joyful dove
Chirping madly away, laughing the day away
But love showed me its evil side on that day

Since then, I chose to live only as a single
But it seems that being single means being weird
So, should I succumb and be no more abominable?
Should I follow the route as does most of the herd?

Five Sisters

To buy a star, I wouldn’t buy just one,
For one all by itself cannot be fun.
I’d buy a group, and five to be precise
because two, three or four would not suffice.

It’s five I want, and five that I would buy,
and if you ask me, I will tell you why.
A special daughter each would represent,
Our mother’s shining dears, all heaven-sent.

Each one so lovely, mother says, So GOOD.
We came to earth to share a childhood!
With eyes so light, and dimples when we smile;
alike and yet distinctive in our style.

Such happy memories and so few bad.
What secrets shared, what revelry we had.
Divided now, we each live far away
from one another; what a happy day. . .

If once again together I might be
with Thea, Jenny, Dori, Melanie. . .
And give them something named for what we are:
“Five Sisters,” for we each deserve a star!

My secrets to happiness

Should you want to know my secret
That which I keep as my own darling pet
That which keeps me happy
I shall tell you about it merrily

Yes, I do care to pamper myself
Mainly though the kitchen where I do enjoy being the chef
Eating healthy
Does keep me light, as light as a leaf

I also care to make sure my cosmetics' supply is full
Else, I would not feel that I do look beautiful
Yes, a perfume is always handy
As would be a lipstick or my shades, so shady!

I do indulge myself in matters pertaining to freedom
See you I do live according to my ideas
I care not to live a life so grim
A life lived according to the rules of ancient grandmas

Yes, I also do love keeping fit
An hour at the gym is worth a good treat
Looking good in my skin
Makes me believe that every little trick of life I shall win

More, my secret is in penning down my lines
Yes, a way to ease my overloaded mind
Brimming it is with imagination
All ready to become works of my own creation

Lastly, my secret to happiness is having been given a view of the open skies
Yes, a mere blessing it is to have been given such a glance
Never shall they be described, not even in any works of astrology
Indeed, I do know that someday, after death, I shall wake up to another ambiance!

Yes, I do bask in indulgence
My indulgence is mine own elegance
Else, see you I would not be so happy
Else, I would not always be so preppy!

The more things seem to be changing
The more they stay the same
We must adapt and go with the flow
Because change is the name of the game

We struggle to keep our heads above water
There are times it's a losing battle
A life long struggle to make ends meet
At times we're like a herd of cattle

However when reaching our senior years
When pressures seem less intense
It's nice to sit back and reflect on our life
And remember the happy events

It's then we realize what life's all about
Not about how many possessions
It's being happy and content in our skin
And using our time left with discretion

The more things seem to be changing
The more they stay the same

Every home should have a Jacuzzi It's the only civilized way To melt away your cares and troubles Puts zing back into your day Nothing else is really quite like it As the jets open up your pores It's such a happy invigorating feeling Like the whole damn world is yours Feeling like each of your body parts Is singing and offering you praise For waking up those happy feelings Giving thanks for each new day Now I won't get into 'two in a tub' That's a totally different ballgame Suddenly it's no more about cleanliness Your focus sure ain't quite the same A great subject for an X-rated poem So watch for it down the road Getting that anxious feeling already Must cool it or my loins will explode! © Jack Ellison 2012

A Nibble

They started at the break of day
For happy day of fun.
Each hoped to catch a mess of fish
Before the day was done.

They hurried to remembered spot
Where they'd had past success,
To cast their bait from a high wall,
With some skill, more or less.

These siblings wanted to surprise
Their unsuspecting mom.
The sweet, young miss was Eloise, (Ell-o-wise)
Her brothers Jack and Tom.

At first the fish refused to bite,
But these three persevered.
And each went home with their fair share
Before sun disappeared.

Happy Or Sad, It Is A Choice

Why is one person more popular than another? Could it be their approach to life? People gravitate towards upbeat individuals To forget their own trials and strife If given the choice to be happy or sad Why would anyone chose the latter Life's too short to get hung up on negatives When really so much doesn't matter Life was meant to be lived like a stage play An opening, a middle and an ending With so many diversions to test us each day Our quest must be totally unbending There is no substitute for a happy full life When you're gone and lovingly remembered People will only recall the good times you had So be cheerful till you get to December © Jack Ellison 2013

Happy is all about attitude, my friend
You can choose to be happy or sad
The glass is half empty or maybe half full
It's your choice to be grumpy or glad

It's all up to you and the mood that you're in
Can determine the way things will go
If you think with a real positive mind
Then for certain your spirits will grow

You'll love all the buckets of joy you'll get
You will never have had it so good
So put on a smile, sing a happy old tune
You would fly to the moon if you could

And here is another tidbit my friend
It is not only just about you
People around will start tipping their hats
And they'll smile and say 'howdy do'!

The choice is totally yours, dear friend
I can give you advice till I'm blue
But if in the end you're still wearing a frown
You've got no one to blame but you

Starting to tremble, starting to shake What a scary thought I just had What if suddenly I became befuddled Couldn't distinguish good from bad Each time I have to make a decision I'd waffle and sit on the fence Worried I'd choose door “B” and not “A” Start to sweat and get real tense Word for today is “RELAX” my friends Everything will fall into place Try to be patient, what will be will be Banish that frown from your face Things won't turn out as bad as you think Your ship will be sailing again The trick is to learn to go with the flow Till life gets back on the mend I know what you're thinking, it's easy to say But experience has proven it true The more you greet each day with a grin Less chance you'll be singing the blues! © Jack Ellison 2013

I've felt the warmest and newest sunlight at sunrise,
and welcomed it gleefully with a thankful sigh
at an early hour when nobody seems too alive...
a cardinal with yellow feathers brought me a surprise!

That gorgeous bird was surrounded by butterflies
with colors brighter than wild flowers,
swirled around them, to acccompany them
to my silent doorstep and start his usual, daily hymn.

"Thank him with a grateful, happy heart,
look up and His image will appear among clouds;
and although nobody has ever seen Him but Christ...
believe that He'll reveal Himself to us!"

And who will be the chosen ones from every present race...
when this event will occur? Those who have kept the faith!
So pray and with your gratefulness ever alive, give praise!
That promise can be visualized by the multitudes that wait!

"Thank Him with a grateful, happy heart,
take along those good friends who have separated themselves
from a worldliness, which kept them apart...
they run to greet Him in the traquil evening to exalt His kindness!"

One Of The Best Days Ever

Melancholy is a word to describe a mood That humans sometimes experience It often happens after a happy encounter A challenge to your resilience A feeling of depression is really what it is After riding such an emotional high Most of the time we rebound quite quickly But sometimes it lingers for a while Time is a healer in the majority of cases There's no need to fret or to worry In no time at all you'll be back on track Continuing along on life's journey Melancholy is usually just a state of mind But if left untreated it can fester It can turn into an illness much more serious Don't succumb to the pressure Wake up each morn with a big broad smile Laugh at the world and shout Today's gonna be one of the best days ever Now that's what I'm talking about! <3 <3 <3 © Jack Ellison 2014

Lace and Frills

All around me I see folks are glad as can be
'Tis the season when glad hearts are beating
But surely you know, somewhere deep down below
There are hearts that are wounded and bleeding

See the cards go around, while the red hearts abound
Some are decked out with lace bows and cotton
But I haven't a one, I have missed all the fun
I am left all alone and forgotten

I had hoped for a card, yes, I hoped really hard
Just for one tiny note with a heart
Only three little words and I'd sing with the birds
Or I'd suck on a lemon that's tart

But I had me a plan, to the paper I ran
To the hearts and the lace and the cotton
And I made up some frills for some young pretty girls
That by others and me were forgotten

Through the laden branches, how it glows
I wonder if they are waiting there for me?
A light unlike the others I have known
Is shining through a clearing in the trees

I wonder if they can hear what I can hear?
As the night wind whistles winter lullabies
Resounding breezes sing of miracles
And clouds begin to gather in the skies

There is ice upon the river rushing by
With frost upon the windows white as foam
The windshield wipers keep rhythm of a tune
And seem to chant a song of coming home

I hear my heartbeat beating like a drum
As the snow begins to fall to winter's song
Awaken all my loved ones, here I come!
My heart is back again where it belongs....

St Nicholas

As I walk through the door, none looks my way
I was never important, not that many would say
I stand in the corner but nobody sees me
I speak but none turn, it’s the way it’s supposed to be.

The world looks different from the one’s I had seen
The evil still abounds, repeated daily, a bad scene
I speak but none even turns my way, Am I here?
A child comes to me his hand raised, in his eyes there are tears.

All this pain this sorrow, what the purpose can be
Hate, evil doing, never ceases to amaze me
More children come they pull at my hand
I gaze at the innocence and I understand

They smile and they laugh but others see us not
And yet the celebrations go on, but they all have forgot
I am here for them, all, the unhappy, unloved and deceased
They called me St Nicholas, but only think of the feast.

They made me a saint in the centuries long gone
Over prisoner’s and sailor’s and children every one
No one remembers except for the gifts on one day
But I looked after all, they made me this way

Nobody gives me a thought through out the year
But I collect all the children and wipe away their tears
We are the happy ones they all know to come to me
Not only on one day but through out the year you see.

There are stories and legends formed over the years
But if the belief were strong there would be fewer tears
I am the patron saint of so many causes
I am the man behind all the Santa clauses.

But remember my mission was to offer help to the needy
Not to feed all the senses of those that are greedy.
Remember I stand here, but no one sees me
I’m not given a thought, until they bring in the tree.

But I tried in my life to help those needy and wanting
Those that beatified me gave me a task that is daunting.
From the sailors to the innocent and all the children in fear
If you believe in me or not my I wish you a happy new year.

The Softer Side Of Jack

Everyone really knows me As always being loopy and light Although I can be serious at times Silliness always wins the fight It's really just quite recently My happy side has become king I used to get quite emotional At the tiniest little thing Which one of 'em would I rather be A tiny wee bit of both The romantic side is warming But I like my happy side most Perhaps it's just a cover up So my feelings don't get hurt Joking around, making fun of things As life throws out its dirt How many people can really say They're happy within their skin Well I hereby make it known to all I'm the happiest I've ever been © Jack Ellison 2012

Me pushing this stuff? You'll soon catch my drift Then won't get enough You'll beg Happy Jack To bring more good cheer So smile, damn it, smile! Now go have that beer! © Jack Ellison 2012

Early Spring

Ninety days till springtime No more silly hats and mitts Can't wait till robin red breast Sings its happy springtime hit It's by far the sweetest season When that feeling is attained You wake up each day singing That happy spring refrain Could there be a greater feeling Away with that big red nose You feel the warmth all over Right down to your very toes It's how one gets through winter The promise of days ahead Thrilled with the sight of crocuses No winter storms to dread You may say I'm a wee bit early With my ode to springtime fun But ninety days goes by quickly Can almost feel that April sun So hang on just a wee bit longer It'll be here before you know it Probably think I'm a daft old man Or just a silly old poet! © Jack Ellison 2013

Choo Choo Charlie

Choo choo trains are so much fun
As they puff along the tracks
Full of happy clickety clack sounds
With a little caboose on the back

Chugging along up and down hills
Singing some happy wee ditty
His name is Choo Choo Charlie
Bringing country folks to the city

They're always in a big hurry
These folks from the busy town
Poppa needs to earn some money
To pay for Momma's new gown

In the land of big tall buildings
There's not a happy face
Seems like everyone's in a hurry
As if they're running a race

Charlie patiently waits until five
To return them to their homes
Can't wait to get them back on board
Away from the glass and chrome

It's strictly business all day long
There's not much laughter allowed
Till Charlie meets 'em at five o'clock
Once more they're a happy crowd

Why does it have to be this way
Choo Choo Charlie wants to know
Never mind, he's heading home
Happy passengers all in tow!

Barney, Hilda and Clyde

Meet the happy couple
That's Hilda all in white
Barney's there beside her
Loves her with all his might

They're an interracial couple
No problem nowadays
Frowned on not too long ago
But today it's a-okay

Met at the local horse saloon
Frequented by the equine crowd
She was a pretty show horse
He was boisterous and loud

Pretty soon, she tamed him
Settled him down just fine
Any filly would be proud to say
That stud over there is mine

Soon, a couple of months go by
Hilda's expecting a son
The happy couple race around
High hoof-ing everyone

Had a colt, called him Clyde
So proud of their little guy
Running through peaceful pastures
Then off to the clouds they fly

You can see this happy couple at night
When you view the evening sky
The three stars south of Orion
Are Barney, Hilda and Clyde

The Raven and the Dove

The dark raven’s soulful flight goes singing Where an evening song bird blends in the skies Making flight into the grand wilderness Tender is the dove that goes up and flies The two birds as one entwine together But they are like two different beings The raven so dark and evil attacks While the dove, full of love, counters and sings White brightens around the darkest raven Suffocating the raven’s great powers And takes the life right out of the raven Darkness lost, dove conquers all that cowers Flying, the dove coos in joyful triumph Reaches the death of the raven below Resurrects the bird as a dove, and now They go along together as one show

Four Little Stinkers

Four little stinkers
All in a row
They just want someone
To love 'em, you know

People run and hide
Whenever they appear
These white striped kitties
These friendly little dears

First one's named Flower
Second is Bouquet
The third is Li'l Wafter
Last is Sweet Sachet

Skunks need lovin' too
It's not a well known fact
So next time you see one
Just show some tact

Don't hold your nose
Pretend nothing stunk
You'll make this little critter
A happy little skunk

Four little stinkers
Their spray makes you squint
But make 'em all happy and
They'll smell like peppermint

Beware The Honeyed Tones

The whisper of my name, kisses my ears as it lands on the breeze
Gently caressing my senses, each one of them to tease
Falling from the sky, like the dew drops in the mist
Face turned up for dew drop kisses, not one is to be missed

The dew drops fall as tears, rolling one by one down my cheeks
I catch them and hold them close to keep me happy through the week
The only other thing I have to keep me happy through the day
Is knowing that I have you, even though you are far away

My heart you know is yours, you promised to keep it safe from harm
There are impostors trying to take my place and your feelings for me disarm
They creep on in with honeyed tones and flatter with dubious lips
Remember though it is my hand that sooths away pain with fingertips

Whisper to me my name and send it with your dreams
I will awaken you with kisses on dawn’s waking daylight beams
It will be my arms surrounding you not some honey coated femme
Until then remember I love you and I will prove it, when we meet again

I am gonna have to get a job and stop reading mushy books

To The Past

If clicking heels worked, I would go back
to that happiest time of all,
when love was young and exciting
and our children exceeding small.

My parents, my brothers, young husband
were still all alive and well.
How happy I’d be to see them again
there aren’t enough words to tell.

My son was a young and happy lad
with no thought of what lay ahead.
I would go back to those fun-filled days
when he and his daddy weren’t dead.

Don’t you think I have wished all the wishes?
Don’t you think I have tried all the spells?
If tears could have floated them back to me
I’d have cried enough tears to fill wells.

My grandchildren were still of the future
where they were well contented to be.
It was my time to be nurturing mother
to those children so loved by me.

When they were all here, I loved them.
I’m so happy that I told them so.
For the present is all that we have for sure.
To the past we can never go.

Don’t tease me with thoughts of the might haves.
To taunt me with wishes is rude,
For the past is not a prescription
That can be refilled or renewed.

The Tome

There are books that come from many genre Some that create sorrow and painful scars Yet others where the author spells out love Where love is surely written in the stars There is a tome of emotions prepared Written by some great poets of the heart Each poem shows a certain eloquence A piece of feelings that’s sure to impart Some passages are of sadness and pain Others carries some lines of compassion All of these put inside a single book From the greatest of love to full passion This is an example of what exists A beautiful book that’s enjoyable Poets that write directly from the heart All of which is pure and sure loveable

A Child's Christmas

Christmas should be a time of joy
For every little girl and boy
They gather 'round the Christmas tree
Little hearts beating eagerly

Their eyes closely scan each present
Wondering what Santa has sent
Some hope they have been good enough
And would get their requested stuff

Mum picks up each present gently
And reads to see whose it might be
A little heart leaps at its name
And then joyfully makes its claim

After presents are given out
Then it's time for another bout
It's time for presents' unwrapping
One can feel excitement growing

Tiny one still in diaper
Tries to peel off wrapping paper
Mum assists the eager beaver
Expectation growing stronger

Squeals of excitement fill the air
From the other kids gathered there
Their delight they cannot contain
Santa has delivered again

Once again thank you Dear Santa
Setting little hearts a-flutter
Making Christmas a time of joy
For every little girl and boy

but a happy heart
someone to share their love
and satisfy their own heart

my heart stayed a happy heart
it was better that you left
in that way you were smart

Farewell, Sweet Summer

Farewell, Sweet Summer!

Autumn near, flowers bent towards the sun
Almost prostrating themselves-so distressing
Like beggars clutching at Jesus, craving the One
Sunbeams turn their backs without even a blessing

So the brightest star pulls away, off somewhere else
It’s got other appointments to keep
In the distance toll the old mission bells
Like a dirge, and the whole garden weeps

Alas, summer is dying, sucking its last muggy breaths
As crickets scrich their sharp taunting jeers
Not many seem saddened at all by this death
And for this passing mourners won’t raise a bier

Autumn is born, its gestation complete
We excitedly awaited your cool advent
No longer stuck in thick, cloying heat
Gone is the summer of our hot discontent

Yes! Fall is born! Let’s give it a name!
It will spend its time blowing chilled breezes
Soon it will set the landscape aflame
As it whirls all the kaleidoscope leaves

Freed from arthritic twigged branches
As fingers release shiny gold coins
Nature’s allegro pirouette dancers
Auditioning for the autumnal Bolshoi

Others float gently through brisk afternoon air
Like large brilliant harvest snowflakes
Landing softly on a grassy blanket there
To wait defenseless, for the merciless rake

Still Motoring Along

A happy old camper, still motoring along My life has been better than most How come I'm blessed with such good fortune Maybe cause I eat Shreddies by Post A good breakfast is the most important meal Starts every day off with a bang Even if your lunch is burgers and fries You won't get blubber overhang Nutritionists might have a hard time agreeing Bout the lunch of burgers and fries But I've lived a long life and still feel fine So it's yummy McDonald's Supersize One of my secrets is my limit of alcohol Very rarely does this guy indulge Clean living and staying the hell out of trouble Has helped me control my bulge So I give this advice freely without charge You can benefit from my many years Enjoy all the rest of your days here on earth Don't fret if you grow a big rear © Jack Ellison 2014

A Positive Outlook

Each day starts off shiny and bright It's often hard to keep it that way External forces beyond our control Can influence and affect us each day If we're strong and resist temptation Then most days are filled with joy Though each one's still a bit of a challenge A positive outlook we must employ Take it from me, been round for a while So experience is what I've got In my seventy plus decades here on earth Seen it all since I was a wee tot © Jack Ellison 2014

Winter Solace

Snow outside has mounded high.
But I am here with you.
Cozy, cuddled, we two sigh.
The silver sky, now, blue.

Hot chocolate steams in each cup.
Your breath streams on my brow.
Two as one are lifted up.
Embraced by love’s endow.

Winter solace feels my heart.
Outside fawns loose their spots.
Spring shall bring a brand new start.
For now, happy teapots.

Dumb as a sack of hammers,
He thinks he knows it all.
He knows enough to get him by,
But blames you if he falls.

He's careful but not confident.
He's never known a day,
When he was happy or content.
He never learned to play.

He blames all that upon his wife.
Lord knows she isn't perfect;
But he blames her for everything,
And says she is defect.

If things go wrong as things will do,
He blames her for it all.
He knows he didn't cause it,
So she must take the fall.

He complains most every day,
'Bout this, that or the other.
Life in general he can't take,
Seems breathing is a bother.

He blames her for their lot in life.
'Thout her he'd be rich.
It's all her fault, he knows it is,
She's such a stupid bitch.

For years she's lived with naught but strife.
Not one good word he's spoken.
What would he do without his wife,
Without his little token?

He knows he really needs her.
'Thout her he'd be alone.
No one else would hang around,
And listen to him moan.

He needs her there for company,
To play his little game.
Without her he'd be all alone,
And then who would he blame?

                                   Judy Ball

Some people wouldn't be happy if you peed in their cornflakes.

A Festival Memory

The Wenatchee River Festival
Held the third weekend of June
The four of us attended
To hear a Bluegrass tune

Friday the seventeenth,
This year’s opening day
The day I turned seventy five
A time to celebrate and play

I have a special lawn chair
It seems to fit me right
Sitting in the sixth row
The stage was in good sight

A group was performing
Bluegrass at its best
When I had to get up and go
A “must” I will confess

As I was returning
My name was being paged
So I yelled “Here I am”
To the group up the stage

They said “we’ve been told
Your Seventy-Five today”
“We wish you Happy Birthday”
Then they began to play

The Happy Birthday Song
Was sung just for me
The audience even sang along
I was speechless as can be

How could this happen?
My head began to spin
It must have been Chuck Egner
He proved it with his grin

My wife, daughter, grand-daughter
We didn’t know what to say
But thanks for the birthday present
You gave to me that day

Luck Of The Draw

Must have been kind to a little old lady Or consoled a little boy who had fallen Why else have I lived this very charmed life Didn't know it was part of the bargain I'm so very happy for my long joyful life Could partly be due to my lifestyle The happier we are, the less stress we have Leads to days filled with big smiles Not everyone's fortunate, some are sad Their lives filled with torment and despair How come I'm one of the lucky ones Must be the luck of the draw I declare Maybe I shouldn't even question these things Let Mother Nature take her own course Just be happy I'm alive and still kicking And never consider the real source © Jack Ellison 2013

" Oh Happy Childhood "

Oh happy childhood
             Just full of glee
               Was a child more happy
Than a child like me ?

                     Some days were bright
                 Some days were sad
           But they didn't last long
As childhood isn't very bad

                            If I had been good
I was happy as a lark
             If I had been bad
I was afraid after dark

Now as I have grown older
                  I know what it means
                          When after darkness
                                  Come bad dreams

                             For when we are good
                 The world is bright
           But when we are bad
Its darker than night

So friends just remember
                When life seems weary
There may be some things we can do
                                                   To make life more merry

So if we walk in the light
                                     The world is all bright
But if we walk in the evil way
My friend , it will never pay.

Wowsers, just looked outside
Can't find any dirty black clouds
Only see totally clear blue skies
Makes me wanna shout out loud

Hallelujah, happy I'm still alive
Alternative is not very appealing
Hard to breathe six feet under
Must be a claustrophobic feeling

Let's not talk about dying and stuff
On this happy sunshiny day
Positive thoughts are only allowed
So pay attention to what I say

Smile and everyone smiles with you
It's a natural human reaction
Be first to start a whole new trend
You could call it “GiggleAction”

To define the word 'exuberance'
One need not go to the Net
Watch two puppies meet on the street
That's as happy as happy gets

That's real 'exuberance' personified
As they tug upon the leash
Tails both wagging a mile a minute
A couple of ecstatic beasts

What if we allowed 'em both to go free
Exploring until they dropped
They'd surely be two happy pooches
Till in their dog house they flopped

We could learn a lesson from these guys
Begin each day with a smile
Cram in as much as you possibly can
Never know if it's your final mile

Cha-La Cha-La

“Chickery Chick Cha-la Cha-la”
Was a happy little ditty
From days gone by, my how time flies
Those words were warm and witty

“Lamsey dotes and dosey doats”
Brings back those days of yore
When life was fun in the morning sun
And you couldn't ask for more

“Skimmery rinky dinky dink”
Is another masterpiece
Jimmy Durante sang the words
To this clever little treat

“Abba dabba dabba dabba”
A chimp was heard to say
I still remember Debbie singing
In a most delightful way

So when you're down and things ain't right
Just whistle these happy tunes
You'll soon perk up you'll smile and say
“Life is a big cartoon”

Youth seemed an eternal joy
for a gorgeous and happy boy...
no worries over necessities,
with desires without sequence.

The fear of dying was far from pondering,
only beautiful days ahead for the youngest heart....
longing for a tenderness other teenagers never sought,
and sometimes sleeping away the afternoons was invigorating.

Like glass sheding water, his soul was pure and epic
and he never shook his fist to seek revenge;
he never shillied to shin a tall tree with panic...
always used pragmatism whenever on perilous edge.

He lives miserably, living on a day-to-day existence,
but the fear of dying is to exemplify weakness,
not to exert himself and to better before he hits dead-end;
yesterday God was his sunrise, now that light is glimmering instead.

He justifies his misfortunes with an inadequate story,
while his friends enjoy a happy life, he frolics like a sky-lark
feeding on what people discard in a garbage pail daily...
and weeps occasionaly, instead of coming out of the dark.

Holy Cadoodle

Holy cadoodle, do I feel fine
Bout as happy as I can be
Just found out the lump on my back
Was a benign type of cyst you see

Worried as the biopsy was sent to the lab
Fearing the worst as humans do
Didn't sleep well for 3 or 4 weeks
But happy my wishes came true

So no need to hold my breath any longer
I'm good for another while yet
Till the next scary thing that comes along
I'll be just as freaked out, I bet

It's the way humans are or so it seems
We tend to think the worst most times
It's probably the way we protect ourselves
So if the news is bad, we're primed

Whatever's the case I can safely say
Good news is sure great to hear
When you're thinking maybe this is it
And now you've got a few more years

So holy cadoodle, it sure feels great
To be told it isn't the end
Live every moment as if it's your last
'Cause one day it will be, my friend!

I will fashion a poem for you
To suit any happy occasion
For you to remember the do

I will offer a cute little ditty
Even give it a tune if I must
But I expect as part of the deal
You will offer me cake I trust

So look me up, let's make a deal
I'm in the book under “P”
It stands for happy “Poetry Man”
It describes this bloke to a tee!

He Can't Be Real

Some people say, “he can't be real”
Here's what I say to that
Rather be accused of being too jolly
Than trying to strangle the cat

Always see me wearing this jester hat
So everyone will surely know
I'm really trying, though hard at times
Not to let all the sadness show

People don't want to hear your problems
They've plenty of their own to share
They tend to gravitate to happy souls
To help them forget their cares

Finally realized a long time ago
There's no point in wearing a frown
No matter how I feel or what goes wrong
It's not fair to bring others down

No one gets through without some strife
It's as natural as taking a breath
So click your heels and sing happy songs
Anything's sure better than death!

Now you finally know why I do what I do
I'm as vulnerable as all of you guys
The difference is, my attitude allows me
My share of the happiness pie!

Mrs Robin

I am looking out my window
The sky is overcast
Mrs. Robin scurries across my lawn
Oblivious to the weather forecast

They're calling for rain and thunder
But Mrs. Robin is not alarmed
Her only concern is finding worms
And protecting her babies from harm

She's happy with her simple life
Just carrying out nature's plan
We would all do well to pay attention
Good advice for our fellow man

Get back to a simpler way of life
Just be happy you're alive
Feeling the love of family and friends
It's the only way to survive

Sound like a Utopian existence?
I've been called a dreamer before
No doubt we've got to start somewhere
Before the world we know is no more

Mousies Running Wild

There's a bunch of furry animals
Running around our house
Cats and dogs and ferrets
And even a little mouse!

Now Mom and Dad aren't happy
With mousies running wild
But we sure love our furry friend
He brings us lots of smiles!

He plays a pretty fine fiddle
That big folks cannot hear
Unaware of those happy tunes
Dancing in their ears!

I've named him Happy Herbie
He brings me so much joy
It's hard to think he's really real
He seems like just a toy!

Don't think I want to grow up
And lose this special gift
Seeing things through little eyes
In dreamland I'm adrift!

May the Season

The house now decorated, brightly so
With lights and adoration;
Bringing the season, happy times
To those with admiration.

A wish, I wish to give to you
So merrily this time;
A ho,ho,ho and some good cheer
All rolled up in this rhyme.

Please take with you the season’s warmth,
You’ll find it in the hearts
Of those who choose to smile for you,
Like fire in a hearth.

May each salutation that you speak
Be gracious and sincere,
For happiness and love flow easily
At this time every year.

May you get, for all that you wish,
But, be happy even more
May the season see you safe, my friends
From now and evermore.

That Special Place

The distant view, the land that’s seen
From the mountain where I stand
Is of my dreams, that place of dreams
That one true happy land

I hope to reach upon this day
To stand among the crowds
Who reside therein this happy place
And sing with them so loud

Then my dreams will be no more
As my wants would all be met
For in this place, this place of dreams
The land I’ll not forget
