Iowas Child

Gone are the fields of winter white
soon to be replaced by hues of greens and yellows,
in the interim, fields of barren brown and dirty gold
turned, to breathe warm air from departed winter chill

Plumes of black and gray from mans machine
kneading the back of Mother Earths desire,
before impregnating her with the many seeds
that will produce offspring to quench mans many needs

oh, how lonesome she looks, so alone
holding yet to some remnants of children past,
left only to cradle her dead, left by man
yearning to suckle new life, as only a Mother can

Above, from the heavens, Father prepares
to germinate those so many seeds,
with life sustaining necessities only he is allowed
sunlight and life giving rain, loosened from the clouds

within days Mother is impregnated
she can feel the multitudes of organic life,
moving within her womb, yearning, growing, needing
the escape, to be warmed and nourished by the Sun

Minutes turn to hours, hours to days
suddenly weeks pass, and yet another life,
giving rain, descends from guilded clouds
arms and fingers, of her children, open, sustained

nearing the end of a warm and wonderful summer
it is time for Fathers other children,
to reap what he has sewn
time for Mother Earth to let her children go

My, how they have grown, tall, lush and full
of the fruit they were meant to bear,
to provide nourishment for the masses of seeds
grown to maturity, in need from the father

Again, the gray black plumes of mans machine
come to life, they move through her fields,
her children, like a predator among prey
until, she is left again, with remnants of children past

Soon she will be blanketed again in winter white
gone will be the warm breath of life,
her children taken from her, she is again barren
only to be betrothed to a promise of new life.

I wrote this on a day trip to Illinois from Iowa across wide open farm land.

THE FIRST GIFT

The First Gift

There’s news for the young and news for the old,
And news for a world lonely and cold,
And down through the ages this story’s been told
How Love was revealed to all.

Into the world that was full of strife
God told Mary that she would give life
To a boy-child, and become Joseph’s wife
And not to be afraid, at all.

In order to keep the law of the land,
They traveled in winter over hills, rocks and sand.
To Bethlehem they went, hand in hand
But there were no rooms for them all.

The inn keeper said, ‘I’ve no rooms inside
But out here there’s a stable; around the side,
So in you all come, it’s dry and wide.
They all trooped inside, one and all.

The donkey and ox shared their bed in the straw.
Joseph spread their blankets over the floor
He put hay in the manger, and then saw
Mary give birth in the stall.

He went to her side and beheld the sight.
In wonder he helped her through the long winter night.
They placed the babe snug and tight
In the manger; He slept through it all.

The first to hear were watchers of sheep
Wrapped up in their robes, their watch to keep,
Staying awake, they did not sleep,
Until the sun appeared over all.

While they sat in the fields all through that night,
The light from a bright star gave them a fright,
Until the messenger came within sight,
And pointed the way to the stall.

This brightest star shone across every nation;
It showed the way on this special occasion,
For three wise of men, who with elation,
Followed this star to the stall.

First shepherds, then kings entered the door
Of the humble stable, where Jesus they saw,
Among lowing cattle, in a bed of straw;
God’s brightest star; born for all.

Each offered their gifts to the one who would give
His life, so we might know how to live.
When we do wrong, with love He’ll forgive,
So we can forgive one and all.

At Christmas time, like that first gift from heaven,
There’s love received with each gift that is given,
Wrapped in fine paper and sparkling ribbon,
To remind us God’s love, shines for all.

The words set to rhyme and rearranged,
This story throughout time, unchanged.
Just as God's love has never changed,
It is here and now for all.

The First Christmas Present

A spider spun a silver web in a mound of golden straw, Then he hid himself inside the stack, away from the wind so raw. He yelled down to the sheep below Who were trying to huddle close, “It’s times like this that I wish there was a fire for a mutton roast. For winter had come upon the land and his barn was deathly cold, He wasn’t sure if he’d survive the night if the truth of it were told. He tried to dream a dream of hope to get him through the night, But he couldn’t bring himself to sleep because of a blinding light. A star was shinning down on them as if the sun in mid-day glory, The little spider had yet to learn of the coming Christmas story. Below was a ewe with her lamb both snuggled up together, Trying their best to keep warm in the cold of the winter weather. “I’d never trade places with you anyway,” the mother sheep bleated out, “Why are you so happy in your hate to lend voice to pain and doubt?” The light from heaven kept them awake and staring in wide wonder, When two weary travelers entered in and the straw became their plunder. The little spider became dislodged as a nest of straw was piled, And he could see that one of the travelers was very great with child. The three companions watched it all; they’d never seen a human being born, They were all surprised when at his birth There came the peal of an angelic horn. A herald’s call went out to all the land announcing the newborn king, And the spider and the ewe shared a laugh to think of such a thing. Because this baby was so very small and his parents were so poor, Yet there was something about this newborn child that neither could ignore. The spider looked down on the ewe and said in a voice too bold, “This baby needs to be swaddled now to keep him from the cold. Good ewe I can spin for him a cover if you’ll allow me to use your fleece.” So together they worked to swaddle the child on this night of Holy peace. The mother smiled at them all as she took the blanket for her boy, Then laid him in a manger poor and they were overcome with joy. The meaning of this wondrous event was what made them all feel glad, For they had brought the first gift to the Lord by sharing what they had. And the warmth, which they had provided the child, also kept the three of them warm, May the loving joy that they discovered keep you this Christmas morn. Merry Christmas!

Something good

The smell of coffee: hot and bitter in the cold winter night
With the rhythm in the left hand and the rhyme in the right,
He wrote a poem in his secret pocket,
A wistful star like a speedy rocket
Ready to leave this planet intense blue
In search of other traces of life anew.
He remembered after mother had died,
In the cold touch ,stalagmites and stalactites cried.
Father and son felt a strong taste for sweets.
As in the sunset, the blind boatman meets
With an awkward touch the water`s ring
But generally they needn`t to eat anything
For a while they rested an extraordinary team:
Father insistently (sometimes boring) told him
All his recollections:childhood, war and the rest…
All muscles and teeth pressed hot, like ice on the crest.
The son learnt them by heart, and later
He would retell them to father, even better…
One was on duty to wash the dishes;
The other tried to follow his wishes…

Their only joy was to read and read and read…
One had to cook at home ,and to bake the bread
In a bread factory:He was happy even when he was sad.
He could recognize each bread: All his loafs were bad.
He was like Chaplin in “New Times”.
He was speaking in figures and rhymes.
He wore a monk beard and father was much more younger.
Looking through the window: grey hunger and anger …

At the weekend, he used to ask his father
About the favourite meal, but rather
He would find a surprise the next day.
Each day was windy winter and grey…

Father had the same touching answer:”Something good”.
In the strange interference ,water and fire ,one was rude.
Solitude was their common friend stealing in like a lizard,
But, in the afternoon they played sweeping their courtyard.
They had leaves in autumn and snow in the winter.
The sky was grey without sun, the clouds were bitter.
Father was counting the leaves, in the old horizon
The son was painting the days ,in the cold horizon.

The war with the falling down leaves fighting hard
With red faces like an inveterate drunkard .
And years after his father met his final hope,
The son would stop in front of the sweets shop ,
Ready to buy recollections as Christmas tree sweets.

Winter is near

Summer is gone winter is near the rain will come the leaves will fall the sky will turn gray and the clouds will roll in. In addition, the birds will fly south for their winter break. Forevermore, when the leaves start to grow back, the flowers come out, and the bees are buzzing. For their the birds will be back, with all their little ones all so nestled in their nest with mother feeding them from beak to beak, as you can hear them singing a beautiful tune.
You cannot help but think how wonderful and beautiful the birds can sound as their mother is feeding them from beak to beak.

The Dead of Winter

In the dead of winter Mother Nature is callous and cruel

The wind bites the cheeks as it whistles around the corner

The ice crystals sting the eye like a desert sand storm

Only to blind you with it's forceful gusts

The land becomes colorless filled with white

In the dead of winter Mother Nature is callous and cruel

The trees become stripped of their leaves

And the wind howls through the branches

As the wind swirls and twirls

It freezes everything in sight

In the dead of winter Mother Nature is callous and cruel

As sheer ice covers the landscape

The snow drifts begin to pile

looking like dunes of desert sand

The roads start to become impassable

In the dead of winter Mother nature is callous and cruel

In the dead of winter Mother nature is callous and cruel

The ponds and rivers freeze to solid ice

Snow storms hit with a powerful vengeance

Blinding everything in it's snowy path.

Winter's Lair

Evening skies darken to ashen gray
Mesmerizing, no glance dare go astray

Small living creatures sense looming danger
Low black clouds, mother nature's anger

Trees scatter moonlight's eerie shadows
Warm breath turns crisp in this sudden winter castle

Stardust lands on frozen meadows
As creeping fog erases moon's shadows

Icicles hang like stinging tassels
From petals on yesterday's beautiful flowers

Footsteps today placed upon soft green grass
Now shatter beneath me like breaking glass

Bare exposed arms of the mighty oak tree
Even her fingers, tremble of what is to be

Now encased completely in coffins of ice
Awaiting mother nature's one destructive sigh

To bring down her branches
Out goes the power
End of story

What A Mother Of A Day

What a mother of a day I’ve had
It’s snowing and it’s really bad
Took the dogs out for a walk
All the neighbours want to talk
What a mother of a day I’ve had

The snow is now up to my knees
The wind chill is in the breeze
I think that I’m going to sneeze
For sure I’m going to freeze
What a mother of a day I’ve had

Tried going shopping in the car
Didn’t manage to get very far
The roads are slippy slidey
There not one bit tidy
What a mother of a day I’ve had

Me I live on a hill
And the neighbours find it a thrill
When I slide by on my bum
They laugh and think it’s fun
What a mother of a day I’ve had

Well now the evening is near
I cannot help but give a cheer
Slippers on and by the fire
In the chair I most desire
With a steaming bowl of corned beef hash

Corned beef hash recipe poem to follow hope you like
