Winter's Kiss

The bird’s house is capped with a snow drop.
The bird’s bath is a mushroom like form.
The branches all groan, snap, crackle, pop,
with the weight of the night’s snow so borne.

The cat’s on the rug near kitchen vent.
The furnace is pumping out more heat.
The tea kettle’s whistling with intent.
The old gal settles down with a sweet.

The car’s all shrouded, a sheet of white.
The trellis is a grand work of art.
Outdoors the benches all gleam with ice.
The new moon’s a rare, randy, upstart.

Darkness descends will a muffled whisper.
She sips tea and remembers who’s kissed her.

whispers in silence

What keeps me awake
When the cool breeze bears whispers of things to come
Promises to be fulfilled on the morrow?

Is it my joyless moment of cognizance
knowing that this stagnant night ripples from no real breeze
Only imagined promises birthed on the whims of a longing heart?

Yet, what keeps me awake
is not these dreams of flattering winds
but it is this night of lifeless branches and unrifled leaves
the lack of real whispering winds taunting my heart
What truly keeps me awake
Is the silence of tomorrow.

Missing Christ

I choose to celebrate the Savior's Birth.
A day of happiness, a day of worth.
I sometimes worry, it will disappear.
Christianity, is not welcome here.

I know my faith is not the only one.
When it's mentioned conversation is done.
We are just talking why is there such fear.
Christianity is not welcome here.

There was a time, when at school we could pray.
A distant memory from yesterday.
Christ has been removed, from holiday cheer.
Christianity is not welcome here.

I think you should celebrate in your way.
Everyone should have there own special day.
When I'm restricted, it brings on a tear.
Christianity is not welcome here.

Arc of Light

Here is a new beginning, at the red mouth of the river, overlooking the ripple of dark waters that floats the recent past beneath the mottled stone bridge and into the ocean of ancient seas On this, the first day of the great year, from the arc of the bridge, I saw all seasons disappear. And the reasons for happiness, come reckoning with good fortune. While releasing the old ways, as if they were leaves, drifting downstream I have seen my own reflection, and the acceptance of the light, slicing through the dreaming water, resolving my old misfortunes, until they are dissolved into the rust of the silt So, here I am, once again, under the tilt of the moon, on this 15th day of light, The candles flickering, with gentle flames, calling my name. Each an exquisite reminder, that we can start again. Beckoning me to start anew... so that I will part with old pages that drift away with old years, beneath the bridge I have walked across... lit by parchment lanterns, and the arc of light from the moon's infinite heart

JUST AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE

Christmas time all smiles and cheer…. Is what it supposed to be this time of year…. I know some would say "It is" and will happily agree, But I’m sure some feels like me…. That Christmas just isn’t what it used to be…. All I seem to hear is what you get me!!! It’s like the spirit just left!! Taking all its glorious wonders to see… Leaving us with nothing but some presents and a tree…. Now where’s the joy in that u tell me???

NO THANKS I AM FULL AND DON'T WANT ANY WHORE

I’M FULL THANKS AND DON’T WANT ANY WHORE

I am a transient with words unspoken
I am a soul who’s been damaged and broken
For years I lived someone else’s life
Being my son’s little league coach and picking up a drunken wife
I’m an unrighteous man who’s weary and far too tired
And cannot find my way out of the muck in which I’m mired
I yearn for consistency yet find only daily different circumstances
A mortal who is always and forever taking chances
All I want is one place to live until I live no more
And in essence I have become Jesus Christ’s finest whore
I am a troubled transient

More Than A Dream

Written in honor of Black History Month-February 2010-

I have a dream……
That there will be no more labels of “Black” or “White”
That people will come home to their families and relax at night
I have a dream……
That no one will second guess, because of my skin color, my character
That I will never in my life hear the words, “Nigger” or “Cracker"
I have a dream……
That should I marry a black woman it will be totally acceptable in society
That people of all races would not be judged by their tastes in variety
I have a dream…….
That if I have a bi-racial child he or she will be accepted by their peers
That they’ll be given an equal chance to pursue their choice of careers
I have a dream…….
That more leaders, like Dr. Martin Luther King will be raised
That the tragedy of his death would be erased
I have a dream…….
That all races will stand hand-in-hand, until the “Twelfth of Never”
That people in the world would become color- blind, forever
I have a dream……
But….this is more than a dream to me
I pray that I may awake and find these things have become reality!!!

A Thin Line

I love you; I hate you
Jealousy is not the cause
Killing you wouldn’t justify
Lustfully breaking the laws

The third line is not an option

Campmeeting Grounds / Martha's Vineyard 2009

Summer lay lazily over the land
The languid weight of wind and water
bowing tree limbs,
chasing sand squalls over sidewalks.

Cyclist meander dreamily down aisles
of rose of Sharon shrubbery
past banks of day lilies
and Pez purple hydrangeas.

Tourist, as colorful as the flowers,
buzz busily through seaside shops
in flip flops the color of Necco wafers.

Their gummy soles making
sucking sounds upon the linoleum.
In a gingerbread slumber
like fairytale children, they gather;
in pink, lime-green, and purple houses
The poor of a Christian God have become
the rich of a capitalist nation
and they hoard their paper-lantern dream.

Friday the 13th

13
riding out the night
searching for that solar storm
instead, up ahead
columns of wind
breach the scene
green trees clobber the place
as bedlam pulls out the white swords
and once again it's on

808 Boom!
808 Boom!
808 Boom!

moonlight exsanguinated
even though it was full as can be
no sign of Jason Voorhees either
maybe he's graduated from the mask

this place ain't so scary
I said,
"THIS PLACE AIN"T SO SCARY!"
(stirring up the devils)
only 15 minutes 'till we're in the clear
Saturday 14 is near

Valentine's need apply

I gave up on you years ago
Felt love in my life had to go
Felt free and strong without care
Never needing wanting another there

Life has changed so much since then
Looking inside I take to pen
Wonder have I grown up yet
To include something more than a pet

Another February comes to be
Alone again hello, just me
Valentine's day it comes and goes
Will I again receive a rosé?

Will this be the year I'm ready to see
If someone can share their life with me?

Yesterday's Gone

H ow the years fly by like paper in the wind

A new year, a thread in life’s fabric to be sewn

P ieces gently stitched will one day take wings

P atterned like brocade with a mix of flowers gently strewn

Y arns of yesterday are quietly stored away

N ew beginings are generous gifts given to begin again

E ach one, a new day to live, play and travail

W eaving the fabric of life in spite of occasional dark rain

Y esterday’s gone forever into the well of time

E ach melody we write, through the universe resounds

A constant tune of worship for the divine

R eaching the Creator in whom alone peace is found

IS IT RESOLVED

The holidays are a time when we hold loved ones close

making New Year's resolutions to be better and not so morose.

With trimming the tree, the gifts, the cards, the good wishes for all

Spending too much time and money at the mall.

Our hangover on Jan 2nd makes our resolutions go out the windows.

A New Year's Prayer

Heavenly Father, hear my plea
At your altar on bended knee.
Prayers I offer for those I love,
Prayers to you Lord, up above.
You have seen the mess we've made.
Not the plans that you had laid.
Everywhere there's war and sadness
Where there should be peace and gladness.
You must be disappointed in us all,
Each of us who ignored your call.
All mankind should this year strive
Really hard to keep humanity alive.
Lord please help us do our best
On your behalf, a peaceful quest.
Rid this earth of anger and hate.
Don't let our past dictate our fate.

POLITICALLY CORRECT, MORALLY INEPT

America the beautiful, home of the brave,
One Nation under God, marked upon their graves,
Our founding fathers built this land,
“In God We Trust,” they made their stand.

A nation built with strong convictions,
Free from British Rule,
“I Pledge Allegiance To The Flag,”
Was said in all our schools.

There was a time when we would pray,
After each and every meal,
Cite the Ten Commandments,
Let The Master do His Will!

“HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER,
THAT THY DAYS BE LONG AND STRONG,
LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS YE LOVE THYSELF,”
Is sung within our songs.

A New Light shines upon us,
A Fire from down below,
Satan is spreading his political views,
Erasing all that we’ve come to know.

The prayers that once were said in schools,
Became “A Moment of Silence,”
The paddling we received from the Principal’s rule,
Has been replaced by murder and violence.

“SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD,”
Is Exactly what we have done,
Children running amuck and wild,
Shooting parents with their guns.

The Special Day we celebrate, each and every year,
The day in which our Savior was born, filled with joy and cheer,
Has become a day of infamy, a name we must not say,
Merry Christmas has been replaced, by Happy Holidays…

I'm so Thankful For My Father

Lord… I’m Thankful For My Dad!

Lord, during this special day, I’m so glad…
For giving to me such a special dad!

He’s been very thoughtful and kind!
Fathers like him are very hard to find!

I remember growing up with my brothers…
He was special to us, like “no other!”

As a young boy, he taught me God’s ways.
And I’ve kept it throughout my days!

I’ve often sought his advice and counsel…
Especially when life
was looking “awful!”

He was there to give support
 the best he could.
Trying to help the best way
 he understood.

I suppose now that I’m growing old…
I’m remembering more things that my dad told!

“My father is one in a million.”
 Is what I believe.!
Many blessing from him
 I have received!

May the blessings of God daily surround him!
I’m so thankful that my mother found him!

Thank you Lord for giving to me a dad like this!
May his days ahead be happy
 and blessed!

" Bahama Nation"

A nation of peace,a nation of pride
A nation that's spread far and wide.
A nation of hope,a nation of joy,
Thats free for all, man, women ,girl and boy.

A nation to give,a nation to take
A nation filled with reggae, socca, calypso and rake and scrape.
A nation of colors; black,gold,aqua....sometimes called blue
can be seen everywhere above land and under sea too.

A nation of democracy and old english style, but things sure have changed if you
look up our file.
From outside rock stoves,to TV,radio, computers and wi-fi connectivity.........
I'd say that a long way from July 10 1973.

An nation filled with hospitality, love and history,
Arawaks,Caribs and American Indians are the basis of our nationality.
A nation where Tourism is number one, because of the Bounty of sand sea and sun.

Yes,a nation of Youth, sports ,culture, uniqueness and island fashion trends,
Like native Androsia our own local blend......and straw work and junkanoo, the list has no end.
This nation of beauty, splendor and self defense ;yes its celebarting its own INDEPENDENCE.

This Independence Day July 4th

To my fellow Americans,
during this 4th of July.
I have a thought.. . Here's why…

When we salute our flag
 ever so grand.
Our country's foundation
 is sinking in "quicksand."

This is because. From God...
We're way "off course."
Driven by lust, greed
 and an "immorality force ."

Much ungodliness continues to rule.
As God has been
removed from our schools!

We hear of "separation of
church and state."
Anything of God...
Many people seem to hate!

America! Listen to what
this message is about!
Everything of God is
slowly being taken out!

We must return to Jesus!...
He gives true freedom indeed!.
The truth word of God’s .
Our country must read!

Living for God is worth the cost!
Without HIM...
 America is forever lost!

Two-Fifty-Four

Two-Fifty-Four
©2012 C. Brent Cloyd

I bought a new scale at the Wal-Mart store.
Made it secure and level on the floor.
I took a breath, then stepped on.
The digits I saw made me moan.
Surely, I do not weigh two-fifty-four!

Let’s balance the scale, then I’ll try once more.
Adjusted proper, they’ll give the right score.
This time the scales will behave.
I stepped on, tried to be brave.
But with a grin they said “two-fifty-four”.

I would like to throw these scales out the door.
Wish they were lying, but I can’t ignore.
I’ve gobbled many things sweet
And chewed on too much red meat.
My expanding poundage is “two-fifty-four”.

My belly is huge, my chin is galore.
Need to lose it, but process is a chore.
Need diet low in fat and starch.
So my stomach will not arch.
Hope to be smaller than “two-fifty-four”.

Would a brisk walk cause my health to restore?
Would losing blubber help me not to snore?
Let’s get started. Soon I say!
Well - after the holiday!
Cause my clothes don’t fit at “two-fifty-four”.

Beautiful Lies

December 18, 2012

Beautiful lies known as little white lies
yet one is no more deceptive than each
The truth is what makes it afraid of light
It's important we practice what we preach

Imagination built on lies destroy
Imagination built on truth create
Conquering evil we try to avoid
Tooth fairy, Halloween, Santa abate

Perceptions and images make it real
Origins of Pagan rituals true
We've wandered down this path for a bum deal
Now more lies are created all brand new

The mask behind a beautiful white lie
is the truth with a constant shield, but why?

A New Year Reflection

Partys for couples new lovers and just friends.
Music to fill the night the streets of New york
breath life to old flames keeping even jaded souls warm.

The lonley gather round the TV.
sharing a glimpse at something we all yern to have.
And from the up high the streets seem magic tonight.

the soudtrack of the night will echo
into are hungover minds with a painful yet happy reminder
of last nights celebration.

Late night lovers will smile and go there awkward ways.
So many acts in so many different plays.
creeping back to are corners in lastnights suit and tie.
Tight little black dress kiss worn lips
acting happier than two kids ragged in need of a shave
you with hair in a mess.

And for friends that gather to relive not so real
past glory.
The pages are left to the writter.
To add to lastnights not so original story.

As the barflys gather to battle another unsober day.
I watch this first new day anew.
Take a sip from my flask and thank the lord
for one more year with you.

And tonight I say to you all raise that glass.
kiss that stranger you know so well.
Laugh love and live.
And thank whomever ya choose weve made it through another
year to tell.

What If Christmas Never Came

What If… Christmas Never Came??? What if Christmas never happened? What if Christmas never came? Things around here would be different! It wouldn’t be the same! What if the baby Jesus was never born in a manger? Mankind would be in serious trouble! We’d all be in danger! If the baby Jesus wasn’t born. There would be no nativity. We wouldn’t be able to display this during our “festivity.” It’s almost like this now! It’s an “ever increasing business.” It seems like nearly everyone wants “Christ out of Christmas!” Why does it seem like Christmas is losing it’s true meaning? The very words; “Merry Christmas,” seem to be quickly disappearing! Many say; “Happy Holiday.” They worry they may “offend.” Having a “holiday” without Christ…. Once again! We need to put Jesus Christ back into our CHRISTmas season! He is what Christmas is about! HE is the very reason! May we all take some time to rejoice in our savior’s birth. May there be shouts of JOY! From the corners of the earth! Let’s not take Christ out of our joyous celebration! We need him so much right now! All over this great nation! May we bring to him a heart of love for everything he’s done. As we bring honor to Christ. God’s precious son! May we continually offer to him a heart filled with praise! Not only at Christmas time… But all of our days! By Jim Pemberton 12/05/11

Le Vacance Pretentieuse: Going Home

What is it to see the soil of home again?
A welcome, snow-struck and a return
To cold; sharp white contrasts sunburn.
We converse in broken tongues to men

We know, hooked on holiday language
Comprised of wandering hand signs.
Collect the car and pay parking fines,
Drive through towns and over a bridge

Until we reach the Western gateway.
Oh when will we arrive at our house?
No camels there, only field mouse
Which are eaten by our cat anyway.

The plane flies for an age, slyly yawning
Through the stretching, pealing sky,
A knife through air; what it is to fly.
Our travels over; a new day is dawning.

Celebrating Peace in Solitude - Collaboration with Sandra Stefanowich

Christmas day... scents from your chimney waft my way curtains aside, a dozen cars are dusted by snow boys in your yard cry out while pitching snowballs sensing both comfort and sadness holidays go on, even when stillness fills your home surrounded by memories of Christmases long past wondering what it would feel like to have family again don a shawl, footsteps crunch in fresh snow seeing a visitor from across the street, I wave while on my way to join a neighbor’s celebration preparing to smile at countless nameless faces aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews the “lady nextdoor” self consciously mingles aching for solitude; dreading it as well the visitor comes to mind, is she feeling the same where alone, holiday survivors learn to appreciate the peace.... I see a lady making her way next door she smiles and waves from across the street I give her a smile and wave back grateful for a moment to stall before going in we all showed as we said we'd do a gathering of "family" to pay our due appearances to appease somewhere else I'd rather be on this day is when I feel the most alone this feeling of distance when I'm in this home stilted, polite, unease when there's nothing left to say it was long ago, when we all went our separate ways it's gets too hard to remember reliving the yesterdays of December dreading being here, when solitude is what I want I wonder about that lady, is she feeling just like me where alone, I find refuge in the peace
*A collaboration with Sandra Stefanowich
