Silent Voice

--Tree Silhouette--

shimmering tree
there’s no footsteps around
but fallen leaves

afternoon twilight
heaven is listening
peaceful lonesomeness
Autumn waits
wind blows the mind
leaves falling softly

Come with me 'till the night come

Words are not enough
Language of April showers
Say it with flowers.

Gracious camellia
Daintily posing, but in vain
Begonia lost in thought.

Hopes teeming with ambition
Of a stargazer.

From friendship to love
Exchanging yellow petals
With the deepest red.

Delicate beauty
Of hibiscus in full bloom
Inspires iris.

A blushing lilac
Unaware of dawning day
Dreaming of first love.

Bittersweet flower
Ever loyal to the end
Won’t betray a friend.

Parting time is near
Save the memories within
And forget-me-not.

Yellow hyacinth
With a heart that knows no peace
Nest of jealousy.

Morning breeze scatters
The rich fragrance of jasmine’s
Deep sensuality.
* Hanakotoba is the language of flowers.

                                                    I's walking alone
                                         Near down the stream of silence
                                                    Called my spirit

                                              "Ssshhh" calm blow of air
                                             Embracing my warm body
                                                     Uplift my spirit

                                                   "Ribbit, Ribbit" Oh!
                                          The amazing chants of frogs
                                                  Flattering my heart

                                                "Buzzzzz" the busy bees
                                         Dancing whilst butts were working
                                             Ouch! sweet kiss you shared

                                              "Tweet" the lovely birds!
                                           Circling around the bright sun
                                                 What a wonderful!

                                                 "Tik" ...can't identify
                                           There's moving under my feet
                                                   Alas! pygmy prey!

                                                Can't count what I hear
                                           Wake up my dear sleeping soul
                                                Give one chance to live

Here in the garden

Here in the garden

Here in the garden
Wagtail sings his happy song
He is so joyful.

Oh, such loveliness
How the roses smell so sweet
So many colours.

The dog is sleeping
The doves they walk up to him
He don’t seem to care

The Mulberry tree
Dances on the summer breeze
Oh, so gracefully

The Parrots feeding
Pink and grey and beautiful
Noisy birds are they.

I sit drinking tea
As the sun it smiles at all
I just bask in peace

Such a lovely day
I could sit here forever
I am mesmerized.

Whence Springs Beauty

It’s October, we find time to go by the spring-house to get the tulips. It is time to prepare for winter and the inevitable coming of spring. The bulbs look hopelessly dead and ugly, rather pitiful in fact. John nurtures them tenderly.

fall gardener tucks the bulbs in bed till spring's alarm
Through many snows and chilling temperatures, we do not consider at all what is taking place under the ground. One warm March day we see tiny noses poking up through the soil around the back porch. By April, we are sitting in the swing admiring the result of John’s loving labor of last fall.
seeing the blooms we recall dried-up bulbs
How could such ugliness have turned to such beauty in the cold, hard earth? As May approaches bringing other flowers, our short-lived tulips drop their blossoms and say good-bye. But as John knows, the wisest of gardeners do not hasten to bother the beauty in its passing.
dust to dust all blossoms shrivel with time food for the soil wilting leaves nourish the bulb hidden in the ground
The bulb remains unattractive throughout the whole cycle of growth. Along in mid-July when all external signs of life have faded, John removes the unsightly bulbs from their bed, putting them back in the spring-house until fall. Without them, there will be no blossoms next spring. It is the care we show the bulb which bursts into the beauty we bless in time. HM

The beauty of time:A poem of many haikus

The concept of time
Intriguing in all our lives
Especially mine

Is time an object?
Is it something to fool with?
Can we transform it?

Perhaps we cannot...
Can we manage it? Indeed...
Where does time take us?

Into a new world...?
A world where photos are old?
Even where WE'RE old...

When my time is up
I shall wait... Just wait. That's it
What happens after?

Our forever

Oceans moves in waves
each single heartbeat grasping
claws of steel holding

Trance like beautiful
your every wish come true wings
of a spirit spread

Flying majestic
beauty one golden eagle
power draws inside

Flying high one soul
from an imagination
a gravity pull

Sweetly emotions
singing illusions, one dream
reality kicks

In the arrow strikes
what a fantasy dream sits
feeling floating rose

Essence butterflies
fluttering blossoms sweetly
Explosion hotly

A soul it sang in
one heart that gave wings sharing
a meal delight you

You sipped wine with grace
an amazing smile I could
feel the blood rushing

If I lost you love
a lone wolf will forever
howl to her face sad

Tears sweet surrender
never ending searching space
full of love howling

Felt like kneeling at
your feet adoring beauty
you will always be

Oath of forever
love that very night to you
smiling beautiful

You lit up such love
flames on fire with your
grasping talons hot

Took hold of me deep
your smile was amazing cute
drawing one starlight

Eternity calls
the power of destiny
one in a thousand

You lit up such love
flames on fire with your
grasping talons hot

Wishes trance like hold
beautiful in every wish
granted came true love

Silver shadows in
the deep ocean treasure gem
dancing ripples leap

Liquid silver paint
shimmering moon reflections
mirror distant thoughts

Golden the pathway
walking across rippling in
body, one deep love

Feelings begin to
hold in, emotions sings out
we join together

Passionately we
kiss with all inside my heart
I love you sweet babe

This I co wrote with an amazing beauty on site twenty one the key to the heart's door

I am

I am just matter
My skin made of flesh and blood
Life's own particle

I live everyday
A poet in misery
Seeking to find it

That which has been lost
That which can never be found
That which has no name

Know I what I seek
I would share it with you
Unknown it remains

Love I my own soul
Sure, for it is eternal
Though it is unseen

My life I do live
As it is meant to be lived
Following my fate

I am, obviously
I have a family name
I live, sure, I do

I do ask myself
Of the ways of this realm
Wait I for my death

Eager to see it
The gate of eternity
To be with the Lord

In the end, you ask
Do I really know myself
I would say, I don't

Canada Squared

I live in a place called Canada
where it's always hot or cold
Our bodies adjust accordingly to the freeze or burn of toes.
We have four season's unlike the rest,
and id say its quiet a scene,
But when you're here you cherish the sites
for there's so much to do and see.
We speak Enlgish- We speak French , and not one is all the same
But we do our best in hopes to include all equally just the same.
Up here in norther Canada we do all we can do
but when it's minus fifty eight we're also inside too.
Sometimes it's hot and sometimes it's not, in upper Canada
That's why we try to stay outside- when our weather is just right.
Canada can be the place to be
If its meant for you.
You'll stay with us and all the rest
 All just because you want too.

Clouds over the Ardennes

Reflected sunset;
Pink cotton candy under
Full moon, azure sky.
In Spring 1981 I was living in Charleville-Meziers in the Ardennes department of France. I looked out my window one late afternoon, and saw the sunset colors projected on clouds over the opposite horizon, above the village houses and forests on the mountain slopes. Stepping out onto the balcony, I could see the sky progress from light blue to a deep azure, with a full moon above them all. The beauty was stunning; I couldn't take pictures fast enough.

Sunlight love

You are like the sun
shining in brilliant beauty
but I cannot stare

Too close and I scorch
flaring passion sparks within
burning out my heart

Too far and I die
frozen cold in lifeless ice
I die without you

Beyond my control
I orbit, needing your warmth
I cannot approach

In the sunset glow
the red flows like my blood does
when gazing at you

I cry at night time
moonlight fails to reflect you
and my spirit fades

At sunrise I smile
because I can spend the day
before your presence

Mid-autumn sings
Moon cakes and tea;
Pavilion tales

Moonlight greeting
Window view delight;
Scented aura

Fireworks sparkle
In soaring flight;
Curious eyes scan

Skyline outbursts;
Fragrant pursuits

Breezy revelry
Mid-autumn dance;
Songs tell a story

Plums and peaches
Harvest of plenty;
Happy times niche

Moon on the lake
Kisses the earth;
Ephemeral vistas

Voice in the wind
Wet with sure rain;
Thirsty earth waits

Clouds in the mist
Airy cool breeze;
Evening descends

Tea in the shade
Blessings abound;
Harvest ritual

Mystic moon sits
Distant mountain peak;
Symbol sculpts hope

Cicada orchestra
Evening interlude;
Laughter persuades

Lovers greet
Butterfly dreams;
Message of hope

Moon maiden
Seeks lost lover;
Tears fill the lake

Reservoir park
Stray monkeys jay walk;
Children retreat

Dusk flings deep dark
Across the lake;
Distant lights flicker

Dawn flings sunrise
Sure as daybreak;
Life now attends

Beauty Is Truth

Natural beauty of nature Is like a beautiful damsel. She needs no makeup or perfume To enhance her physical beauty- Her beauty is truth, period. An anonymous wildflower Growing with delicate fragrance Beside a forests time-worn path Can’t be anymore lovelier If plucked and placed within her locks; Nor her comely grace be improved. Their “beauty is truth, truth beauty” Apart they are most beautiful; In concert they accent the whole. On a Grecian urn: “Beauty is truth, truth beauty” All we need to know.

A basket of days

Up in the trees,
Cold from this winter night,
Bronze leaves dangling

Along the wet hedges
A train passes,
And doesn't say much.

Sweet hot sun gently
Placed on the surface of my
Face- easy to smile.

The roar of jet
engines- tilting onto a
Set destination

For two nights a
Constant beeping-
Location unknown

Foggy morning-
Down the crowded roadside
Mist swirling in the light

Shadows on the rocks
A small bird takes rest on a
Branch- the buzzing bees

Everywhere the sun
Shines is gold- the valley
Below the haze

Yellow daisies
Sprouting throughout the fields
Early in spring's joy

Moon light on the
Rocks and dead leaves-
Some days before it's full

Thin empty branches
No light-no color
The darkest of view

The morning skunk
Hobbling across the street
Returns to the brush

Candle lit room
No voices range out
But he who stands before us

He has many
Poems- all spoken like
One long biography

Through the crystal
Clear glass a man with a flute-
Leaning with every blow

This night with few clouds
But a full moon-ways away
The pink blossoms

Thistled pine
And off further...
Everything else in the night

Waking up from a nap
My car window covered
In tiny dew drops

Walking up the
marble steps up to a wooden
Door- further unknown

Outside the grocery
Store, everyone is holding
Roses- faces truly sad.

Instantly finding the
Right roses, I swoop them up
And take a big whiff!

Ah! These trees have
Blossomed- the scent of life in
More ways than just one

Above the shingles
Of a brick building, I watch
All who pass by

Busy is everyone-
Pacing a worlds length
Right before my toes.

My surroundings
Pulsing with great noise- I return
To the silent stars

Between the rush of
Walkers, a couple dancing a
Quick salsa

From afar I gaze
At skyscrapers- a light flicks
On, then off again.

Tall and slim skyscrapers-
Man's desperate attempts
To flee earth.

Lying love down in
The candle light- her skin does
Not go untouched

Polished marble
Reflecting the look of the
Sun in someone's eyes

The wind slides
Easily through his black hair-
His smile to all

The water flows
Outward- rippling to the
Edge where the bird sits

Two sparrows sail
Over blank rooftops
Landing in the mint trees

The sound of
Rustling branches-
The palm fans in open air

Hovering in one place-
The loud sounds overhead

The night is long-
A pack of cigarettes lay
Resting on the table

All as one
the birds flail from the
Telephone wire- and return

Lessons From The Leaves and The Tree I

Lessons From The Leaves and The Tree I
( Life's Journey)

Life was beautiful
for all the leaves in the tree
in spring and summer

They flourished and bloomed
under the warm summer sun
and sweetest spring rain

Their color brightened
to a lovely shade of green
that glowed with beauty

Flowering blossoms
from the buds of the fruit tree
brought joy and delight

Little birds would peck
as they sit on the branches
on the lush green leaves

It was the best time
of their lives atop the tree
filled with happiness

But life has seasons
that never stay all the time
they come and they go

Spring and summer passed
autumn came and its cold winds
changing all the leaves

Turning their color
from bright green to brown and red
yellow and orange

Their brightness faded
their loveliness spent and gone
making them pale and weak

How seasons changed them
tempering all their nature
through adversities

Winter will arrive soon
and do her task of sweeping
the bough of the tree

The faded leaves will go
and leave the tree to herself
to make room for spring

When new leaves will grow
to replace those that have gone
in the cold winter

In such a lifetime
they have gone through all seasons
in smooth and rough times

That is how life goes
for all the leaves in the trees
in the cycle of life

Steaming interlude;

I see beauty when I see her .... I feel happiness when she's around ... when I hold
her in my arms it feels as we're floating above the clouds ... before I wished upon
the stars a thousands wishes ... prayed to the gods a million prayers .. to light my
life and lead me out of the dark ... they sent me the sun to shine a path to her ...
now I know the true meaning of beauty ..

A deep stare comes over when I look at her ... It feels as the universe is aligned ..
and all pain is gone when i'm with her .. there's no hurting, not even a sad moment
in sight .. everyday seems like we're growing like two wild vines intertwining
freely ... laying by her side is where I go when I drift off in to space ... there's no
one like her ... a soul so beautiful that reflects through her smile ... eyes that I get
lost in but still in that place where nothing goes wrong ... now I know how it feels to
smile from within ... because of her

Last Leaf On A Tree

(The poem is based on The Short Story of O Henry " The Last Leaf". I was reminded of it while I saw a last leaf in the winter of 2011 while living at Concord, NC)

One leaf left on tree
Not a sound of the sadness
Neither the despair

One leaf left on tree
No undue unhappiness
Neither any pain.

One leaf left on tree
All by itself in the air
Feels no forlornness.

One leaf left on tree
It spends itself in swaying
Breathing in the breeze.

Last leaf not the end
When tumbles down as time comes
Hundreds of buds sprout.

Dewy grass bed
Wait for sunrise;
Kissing goodbye

Sparrow choir
Sings chirpy psalm;
Unrehearsed splendour

Joy of morning
Aura of magic;
Blessing the earth

By winding footpaths
Butterflies flutter;
Flower promenade

July wears colours
Sparkling and grand;
Hot sun teasing

My window view
Tells a fragrant tale;
Eyes soak the sights

Joy wears a gaze
Radiant with zest;
Smiles sparkle

Take a quick stroll
Greet sleepy neighbour;
Breakfast takeaway pack

Time looms large
With calm retirement;
So much undone

Day time dreaming
Impose new feelings;
Doing nothing

Excursion to nowhere
Time is no luxury;
We got a lot

My darling and I
In poignant gaze;
Years now a maze!

Self-talk heals
All sorts of unease;
Keep focus positive

Old age intrudes
Upon the present;
Punctures young moods

Pursuit of happy
In insane world;
So much suffering

I remind me:
Live just one day;
One day at a time

Bio Of His Beauty

It takes my breath away to see such spectacular views
of this world, knowing that even they cannot be
compared to GODS beauty.
It is beyond mans fathomable ability. How can one
fathom what he does not know? or what he does not
understand? We see His beauty in His people, in His
church, in His mercy which He bestows; in his love
which He gives.
We see His beauty in his faith, in His devotion,
in His promise too. GODS beauty surpasses and soars
high above all creation and reaches very low into
a heart so very dark and drear;
far below where we sink into sin. his beauty in His mercy,
His beauty in faith; His beauty in CHRIST; Himself...

Sudden windy gust
Plays havoc with hair;
Air pregnant with rain

Torrential rain falling
Sky oozing water;
Viscous as oil

Long long queue
Taxi stand centipede;
No cab in sight

Common complaint
Common folks echo;
Too little time

By reservoir park
Bench wet with dew;
Curious eyes detect

Morning jog
Wilderness feeling;
Reservoir park circuit

My darling sleeps
Sweet dreams attend;
Angelic smiles decorate

Here I sit vivid:
Sculpt turn of phrase;
Poem emerging

Some long
For the good old days;
Fresh change intrudes

Anniversary thoughts
Think upon yesterdays;
Nothing much said

Needs and wants
Adversarial anti-climax
No solution yet

One more minute please
Morning wake-up call;
Sleepy feel malingers

Sudbury The Rock
Black and crusty surfaces
Loafing in the sun

Work word magic
Line after line;
Feel poignant purge

To write is risky
Touch of insanity;
Satisfying mood swings

Joy in wild moments
Tragic comedy;
Comic tragedy

Love is
Too busy to know;
Why or when or how

Head cracked from
Too much thinking;
Should feel more somehow

Echoes of eternity
In this instance;
Look and listen

By blue moonlight
Hear stray voices;
Yet nothing stirs

Strangers stand
Side by side squeezed;
Elevator delivers start-ups

Familiar faces
Office building complex;
Lonely in a crowd

Pulse, poise and purr
Black panther and brown tiger;
Two condo cats preside

Evening stroll
To night market;
Time for nothing special

Sunlight Sighs

Sunlight Sighs

Peaceful beauty bourn
where cataclysmic chaos
once adorned new dawns.

© Dane Ann Smith-Johnsen
February 11, 2010

Poetic form:  Haiku

Footnote: Bourn is an archaic term that has several meanings.
1.	A small stream or brook
2.	A destination; a goal
3.	A boundary; a limit

Line 1: I used “bourn” in my haiku to bring to mind that the peaceful and beautiful places on
earth were among God's end goals. Creating peaceful and beautiful places.
Line 2: It may have taken seemingly catastrophic events such as the collision of earth plates
to bring such mountainous beauty to pass.
Line 3: And since Day 4 in the creation process, the sun brightened each new day

Humid and hot
Sticky weather persists;
Not even a breeze

Quick strides stumble
Sandy footpath skid;
Jerky reactions

Fruit vendor smiles
Full harvest and more:
Pineapples, guava, durians

Extra long queues
Food court sanctuary;
Hungry mouths parade

Here we go again
Newspaper vendor;
Politically inclined

When I discern
Do I see truth;
Beauty is fleeting

Charm speaks
Drama surfaces;
Sensibility evaporates

Too soon sunset swings,
Abrupt twilight falls;
Tea cup almost empty

Sudden moan and groan
Aches and pains sculpt;
Final testament

Delightful twinkling
Nestled in the midnight sky
Lift our conscious thoughts
