You Were There

Miles farther apart than we've ever been,
along a lonely trail with no visible end,
I keep wanted me to be happy
but it's still like a lock without its key.
Behind your distractions was something you didn't see-
I had managed to take you with me.
You held me up as I tried and failed to ski
and stood beside me in the snow higher than my knee.
When I fell you were the thought that got me up again
and your arms were wrapped around me when I sat in the cabin.
Even without you there I found a smile
because though your number I couldn't dial,
I would see you in a while.
Now I just keep thinking how we're such a lucky pair
because without being there, you were there.
