You Were a Friend
You were a friend
A bitter friend
That searched so much
In every word touched
That yearned for more
From a perfect dawn
That drained the pain
From every tired vein
That searched for a full stop
In a sentence that should last so much longer
You were a friend
A lonely friend
That no matter how far I reached
You would invent a new retreat
As I begged for truth
You'd protest the lie
As every hope I asked you to hold
You discarded
As if you didn't know
You were a friend
