You Were a Friend

You were a friend A bitter friend That searched so much In every word touched That yearned for more From a perfect dawn That drained the pain From every tired vein That searched for a full stop In a sentence that should last so much longer You were a friend A lonely friend That no matter how far I reached You would invent a new retreat As I begged for truth You'd protest the lie As every hope I asked you to hold You discarded As if you didn't know You were a friend
