You, My Father
All those memorable times
When your masterful insight was all I needed
To get me back on track;
Vicariously using your lessons,
Making them my own.
They made you my father.
All those teachings
That made me me;
That showed me the right way to treat others.
To stand up and defend the defenseless.
To lend my strength to those who need it.
Never to hide my thoughts;
To speak plainly and with conviction.
These made you my father.
Your voice, your face, your ideas;
These you freely gave.
Anything I accomplish, every last moment
Is yours;
I bow my head to you in praise.
You, my father.
