Within a Storm

Tis not the calm bright day that tests our grit
Nor guarded safe repose within our lair.
No test is it to keep a candle lit,
When winds are still and placid skies are fair.

Within the tossing tumult of a storm,
No way to steer and know where we are bound,
Where all around a knurling evil swarms,
It's there our own true inner peace is found.

So many of our demons we invent.
They circle waiting for our faith to fail.
We have within the spirit to prevent,
So even in our death we will prevail.

There in the midst of all we are set free,
To want, to love, to strive, or just to be.

Inspired By Winslow Homer's painting "The Gulf Stream"

Hi Craig, I haven't had much time to either read or write lately as I've been involved in political issues and in keeping up with my job. and developing new courses for the college, etc., But I went back to read these to figure out how I want to arrange them in the text. I really like this one. I wish there was some way for the contests to allow for "tied" entries. And the comments you received are so correct. That third stanza is really riveting.

'So many of our demons we invent', so true, so true. I agree with Roy, your poem stands out stronger than Winslow's painting. I admire your craftsmanship of word play, deeply held view of life and its struggles. Congratulations on your well deserved win Craig. Warm Smiles, Connie

I had to look the painting up as I was not familiar with it. Quite an interesting story in itself, but I think your poem has a broader scope than the painting, and is just wonderful. The title threw me off. While the painting is a great inspiration, I think you might want to consider an alternate title. In other words, I think your poem is greater than Winslow's painting. Going in my fav's.

WOW, Craig! I wish I had seen this earlier so I could remind you to enter it in my contest :( For what it's worth, I'm adding this beauty to my favourites because that's how much I enjoyed reading it. I love the idea of finding inner peace through absolute chaos. "So many of our demons we invent" - That line in itself is a golden piece of wisdom.
