Wildlife Surprise

An angry squawking sound outside Disturbed the rural peace. I thought some crazy bird was perched, His cry a mad release. Instead, I stared a squirrel down; His tail was all a'twitch As he emitted clucking sounds At quite a fevered pitch. Between each dozen chirrups, He let out a plaintive moan. The message, loud and clear to me, Was "Leave my turf alone!" In all my years I never have Encountered such a creature. The real surprise was learning Squirrels had that vocal feature. I wondered if perhaps he had A scary case of rabies; Or possibly, he was a she, Protecting squirrel babies. In any case, I went inside And left him to his squawking. I hope he'll scamper far away Before I go out walking!

every evening this one squirrel makes his hideous high pitched noises like a machine gun outside my window and God forgive, I want to shoot him. Can't believe you didn't write this poem for me.

Hi Ilene - I had an encounter a few years ago with a very territorial bird...I believe a Sandpiper. The antics that the bird was going through was educational and alarming. Love the way you shared your experience through your clever and very funny poem! - Gail

A lovely pastoral poem. I enjoy watching the squirrels in different parts of the country. They do have differing habits and sounds.

I absolutely adore this poem. This poem is so fresh, so clever, so funny,so wonderfully delicious. This is a poem I could read over and over and never tire of it. Are you familiar with Ogden Nash? This is better than any of his in my opinion and he is my favorite poet. Bravo!
