Vietnam's Unwelcome Heroes (Co-Written With Tim Ryerson)

We gave Johnny a gun and a uniform Trained him to kill, in a regiment conform Sent him deep into Vietnam jungles warm With little regard to how we did him harm So certain we knew what we joined to fight for We were shipped off to fight an unwinnable war A war of "containment," unlike those before Mothers screamed, fathers wept, siblings ached to the core By parachute dropped to a ghastly death scene Johnny ached for the life left behind, so serene His family, fiance did not know what war means Especially the haunting of lost children's screams Those of us who survived thought we'd just done our jobs We returned and were shamed by violent gobs Of silver-spoon white kids in hate-spewing mobs Spat-on and welcomed as baby-killer slobs No heroes welcome would await these young men No ticker-tape parades were staged for them Just jeers from crowds, uncaring government Greeted the lonely Vietnam Veteran Too classy and noble to demand our fair share We lay in that shabby old hospital there In a closet-sized room with no visitors' chair Understaffed, underfunded, with short-handed care The "benefits" they found would astound all now And it leaves one to wonder how our hallowed ground Would be filled with unnamed graves of men once proud Before the rows of white crosses we should bow Our Wailing-Wall stands now in Washington, D.C. So shiny but black, a telling-tale of the fee We have paid for our nation, our land of the free Will you come pay respects? Will you not at last see? Some veterans still suffer disgraceful neglect So please explain who more deserves our respect Let us pause with angelic choirs and genuflect To show gratitude as on this Wall we reflect Friends, Dane Ann is among those who served in the army during the Vietnam war and is now recovering from long-overdue hip surgery performed at an old VA hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Thank you for your prayers on her behalf. Many thanks to Tim Ryerson, another Vietnam veteran, for joining me in this write.

Carolyn and Tim, you both did a great job on this sad subject! And no it looks like the same will happen again in Iraq and Afghanistan! These wars cannot be won! At that time I did my very best to help young GI's stationed in Germany to save them from being sent to Vietnam and I have taked to a lot of them!...But it is a real shame that the US Govt. forgot about those brave veterans of that unnecessary war. ...Love, Gert

Carolyn, I had to drop low on your list of poems to find one i had not seen yet. wow, how did I miss THIS one?? and how interesting to learn that dane Ann is a VET?? Don't know Tim, but anyway, good job you two did on this poem. Sadly, governments are to blame for all the crap, and our poor soldiers get the burden of it all. Luv, Andrea

My brother is a wounded vet and what you described is as accurate as it gets. Almost every one of my friends who served in Nam have prostrate cancer. Coincidence? I don't believe it. THANK YOU for this one. Vince

Yep! My wife has a friend who suffers terribly from the time he spent in Viet Nam. Will the wars never end? I spent time in service duringt the Korean business, but did no fighting, just spent two years out of my life at a critical time. BIG LOVE, daver

How could a nation not see that our soldiers have to do what they are told...If there is any shame then the eyes should be cast to the ones that put them there in the first place.....So many were lost, and so many came back with problems they had no idea they had.....I love our service people, and I admire them, and thank them...God Bless America, and God Bless The Soldiers.......

Amazing Quatrain Carolyn & Tim. The VC were quite a formidable fighting force. They took Guerilla warfare to a different level. I wonder how the world would be if America never offered their help in many of the conflicts they became involved in. I don't think it would be as safe as it is. Many other countries could easily have been bullied, just my view. Excellent piece >> James

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR KIND WORDS AND comments. I feel very humbled by this poem as well as by those of you who remember those days that can not be erased. I have recovered from my hip surgery. War videos and lost friends will never leave my mind, though. Perhaps that is why my soul pleads for peaceful love one to another, like we find here on the soup. Thanks Carolyn and Tim for keeping us reminded about the pains of war... often emotionally devastating. God Bless U S All with kindness!

Oh my, I am a Vietnam era veteran. And thankfully, have been able to return home after an extensive hip replacement surgery. There were many caretakers and nurses on my hospital stay who went out of their way to make me comfortable. The hospital may be old, but MANY hard working nurses, techs, physicians, cooks, housekeeping folks and others on the team did a great job of making my recovery fast and comfortable. I thank those special good hearted people. And friends at the soup. LOVINGLY,

This turned out great Carolyn!... Thanks for the honor and privledge of doing this co-write with you. I agree with Mr. Kershaw's exception.... It WAS a winnable war but what caused it to be 'unwinnable' was the reason we sent troops there in the first place.... to 'contain' the advance of Communism, not defeat it. Congress feared angering the Soviet Union and China; which borders Viet Nam (as well as North Korea) thus causing WWIII....Tim

Carolyn, This is an excellent collaborative write. One exception in the contents; Viet Nam was not an unwinnable war. We had adequate men, materiel ammunition and supplies to have ended the war unilaterally at any time during that conflict after 1965. We were not allowed to win by our own congress Excellentlty written though. Love, Will
