Vera's Silence
Very seldom Vera stepped outside
to enjoy a day of sunshine,
such a gentle lady,
somewhat pretty.
Her golden strands of hair,
streaked with gray, hung on a body
too lean and fragile and one seeing the many
bruises on her sagging face: abuse she could declare.
Why didn't she rebel and find courage to run?
Was it because of the constant fear of her heartless man?
And being separated from society, her isolation got worse instead;
all was crystal clear: friends didn't have to walk in her shoes to understand.
Had this fearful woman spoken
against her abuser, she would have found support...
saved moments of agony and given her shattered life an outlook of worth;
everyone knew she a chance to free herself, but Vera's silence couldn't be broken.
