I found it snugly tucked away,
Held deep within her private things
Hidden under lock and key
Was there more than eyes could see
A secret love that couldn't be?
A cherished thing, .... a poem, of bliss
A valentine, that held a kiss
Precious keepsake, or was it not?...
Was it heartbreak, was it not?
Perhaps it's not for me to know
She was young, and fair of skin
Perhaps,.... and then.., perhaps,... and then...
Does it tell of secret love?
Another spring, or just a whim?
A treasured time, a change of fate?
The date it holds, confuses me
Revealing now, "what might have been?"
When sleep upon her eyelids came
And took her fairness far from here
What held her name, with antique flair
Of lilacs blooming, roses paired
With lacy hearts, and cupid's spear
This tells me secrets, something dear...
Someone loved her, someone cared
long before my Grandpa dared
