Tough Days
A few years back
When I was on the verge
of homelessness,
No phone, no food, no heat...
I remember going to the bodega,
To look for something to eat
I had $3, a fortune for me
So I walked the three blocks
To that deli
My conscious, however,
Burdened me down,
As you will see...
So I wound up buying cat-food
For my three cats
I guess some people
Would say I'm "bats"
I had no intention
Of acting nobly
Just doing what seemed right,
I trust with this you will agree
Trying times,
These surely were,
So I did my best
To make my cats purr
It's hard to explain,
But watching TV,
Before they cut off
My electricity,
To see people
Eatting in restaurants,
And living in nice homes,
Made me wonder
What I'd done
To make my only comfort
my poems.
