To the Hungry Years
I long for the hungry years
when I was young and struggling.
I was so sure of everything,
my universe had so much possibility
with answers on the way.
Then when dreams began to fade and disappear
and I so often found them unrealized
because of poverty and no supportive means –
ah then
I still had my faith and its beliefs;
but now that I’m older
I have little needs or want
but for health, happiness and love.
Today, I find myself with a different hunger
but a hunger just the same.
Hunger makes you strong, impervious to pain
and as long as the hunger lives
there is life though it may struggle
to be
more than what it was
more than who we are
to simply live.
