The Preacher's Son

A lonely figure twirls itself, concealed by blades of wheat as clouds float through the sky. The form, a boy, looks up from golden field and sees the clouds as wedges of cream pie. He hides despair as if it were that wart beneath his sleeve. A no-fuss, lonesome lad, he thinks of things most wonderful to thwart forlornness. . . He rehearses being glad. Skipping to the thicket, near a brier, he spies some lovely flowers; standing there he uses the demeanor of his sire, pretends to hold a Bible, thumps the air. . . and preaching to forget-me-nots, the boy imagines what might be. . . imagines joy. For Chris' Anything goes!

Looks like my comment on this gem has disappeared so I'll leave another. "He rehearses being glad"; such a poignant statement. I know this is one of your favorites, and for good reason. I wonder if this is based upon someone you knew, or maybe a movie character.

I was just telling my friend Faye Gibson to check out your sonnets. (She is the one I introduced in my latest blog) I had commented on one of hers and told her I had nick-named you 'The Sonnet Queen of the Soup'...This is a perfect example of why...Congrats! - Tim-----PS: I wonder what your inspiration for this was?

Like father like son...the best part about this poem is that it's true..the son really does want to be like his dad...sweet images in your winning write!! So tickles to see it in the top spot. ps...yes, we are in Indian country here in Ohio..located near Fort Ancient the famous burial grounds...and in my immediate area is where the Miami Indians settled...a pretty cool Indian mound. 150 steps one way up...talk about a butt burner!! You'd love the lil workout..legs like noodles in under 10 minutes. ha ha. Love, Gwendolen
