The Mad Man In the Corner

THE MAD MAN IN THE CORNER By Roy Merritt A mad man in the corner was ranting on insane A man who was blinded wracked with mental pain He couldn’t believe they lost couldn’t believe this be true No they hadn’t lost but knifed in back by Jews Most of them ignored him his lunatic intent Ignored all of it their fervor for war was spent But he wished it continue he loved his time in line Loved all the killing, killing to him was fine He browbeat his comrades forever rabble rousing But they paid no attention to what he was espousing They wished him sent off sent out of range Sent off to some ward for someone so deranged He was delusional of course he’d lost his grasp He’d lost his mind his sanity had lapsed And when he left there clothed in all his fears His madness spread and spread, spread for many years And so the army made him a spy In a movement with which he did comply And in a meeting he rose inspired with his hate With all his demagoguery and with him they did relate But he was an object of derision few listened to him at all Until came his Putsch from a Bavarian beer hall It was a failure of course was discounted in the press But when in the court the courts he did impress Many agreed with him that his words full of wisdom Thus his penalty minimal five years he got in prison And there he dictated his thoughts to a fawning Hess Told all of “My Struggle” his intentions did confess And once he was paroled his influence steadily grew And when Wall Street came tumbling down success was his he knew His thugs went into the streets the city they did own Wore their Brown Shirts proudly marching under Rohm He held many rallies incensed his nation throughout Called for destroying their enemies madness he did spout And with each success his citizens came to decide All the killing necessary they fine with genocide But within six years they were loath to understand How they could have ever been seduced by this crazy man How could they have been so foolish this not their kind And not long after surrender no Nazi could you even find No Nazi you could find throughout all of Germany No Nazi anywhere no Nazi might you see “We didn’t know they doing that we knew this not at all!” Dooming all of us destined we were to fall that’s what they told Milton Mayer in his book in fifty five Those whom he could interview those that still be alive We don’t understand this that this could ever be When they came to worship this man “They Thought That They Were Free.”
