The Greatest Gift

It's Christmas eve,
and in the dark I ponder
Alone with my thoughts
Over the year they wander.

Of laughing and of little tears,
Of reluctant hugs for dad,
Joyful smiles and soft I love you
Many good times, and many sad.

The Christmas presents under tree
Awaiting little fingers
My smile broadens wider
As on happy faces it lingers.

Sometimes I feel the loneliness
Biting through my heart
When I look at little heads
Cuddled asleep, in the dark.

For next to me, an empty space
That mirrors deep inside
The loss I feel, the emptiness
Is sharper somehow tonight.

Then from the dark a little sound
Daddy, please, I need you now
And to his bedside I will sit
To stroke his hand and troubled brow.

On this night, this Christmas eve,
I sit here no longer adrift,
Hold his hand and know for sure
That I already have the greatest gift.
