Author's Notes:  "The Future," is a Heroic Couplet I wrote and set in Iambic Pentameter. This poem is the last in a trilogy of three heroic couplets concerning the nature of time and the impact it has on people and societies, whether events or situations in question occur in the past, present, or future.  The emphasis of "The Future" is on the notion and nature of planned or spontaneous events as they unfold for people in the future on the human time continuum beyond what has occurred in the past and the present.  This poem, as with the other two ("The Past" and "The Present") is considered principally from a metaphorical point of view.  I hope that you will find this write of interest too!!  (FINAL NOTE:  All three of my heroic couplets:  The Past, The Present, and The Future -- comprise, in effect, my poet's philosophical view of their individual meanings and their related epochal blending and interaction on the human time continuum.)  (Gary Bateman - December 27, 2014) (Heroic Couplet in Iambic Pentameter)

The Future One’s future footprints in the sands of time, To be enshrined for all to see in time. A time period of shall and shall be, Descriptive too of what again shall be. A future view of such constant motion, Of people, events, passion, emotion. A planned assumption that is great or grave, That a future parade of time must save. A dream so enchanted for the future, Not revealed—as one must learn the future. A future hope for wantonness and wit, To be resurrected now from Hell’s pit. A vision of future epochs in time, Now must our poets plan to set in rhyme. Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved (December 27, 2014) (Heroic Couplet)

Hi Gary! Awesome! Another amazing piece that you've so cleverly written and crafted here Gary my dearest friend. Yes, the future from my point of view, well no one knows it for certain but God our creator. Just always praying hoping for the best to come to us all. Nothing more we can do than that sometimes but pray and wait for all things to work for the best in all and for everybody. Its funny that we think about it much in the present and of course sometimes fear it but when it comes to us we hardly ever even notice it because it becomes part of our evolving present and then part of our trailing past. And most of the time what we fear the most doesn't even ever happen. Isn't it funny? I think it is. I truly enjoyed your Future piece!A solid 7 for you! Your pen is truly golden! Have a wonderful day! And very Happy New Year to you and Ingrid! And God bless you always! :)Love and hugs! xoxxox D.

"D" thanks so much for your read here and on the other two preceding poems (Past and Present), as well. I left out any mention about God in all three of these poems, because for me, it is a given that "He" is there past, present, future -- regardless. Whatever Man becomes involved in anyway is always subject to Divine intervention. Glad you enjoyed this write and thanks for the very high rating!! Happy New Year D!! XOXO, Gary

Sadly like true footsteps in the sand some will be washed away in the matter of moments or if we are lucky a few generations. The only way to ensure our permanence is through the trusting of an eternal gift from our heavenly Father. I enjoyed this thought provoking piece.

Richard, Thanks so much for you read and comments. I'm glad you enjoyed this poem. (Recommend too that you look also at "The Past" and "The Present" which are the other two related writes in this trilogy I put together. They round out the picture.) I do agree with about the Lord's gift. (He indeed makes the final decisions -- but Mankind doesn't always pay attention!!) Best Holiday Wishes, Gary

Past's mirror! We the humans, when plan our future must not forget our Lord's will in consideration to take for our future is enclosed deep in our past! A great trilogy, a profound thought, a marvelous writing! Bravo, my friend, Gary!

Demetrios, Thanks so much for your well-conceived and well-articulated comments. I appreciate them always and I do treasure your thoughts and opinions. I approaches all of these poems from Man's perspective, but you are so right about the divine dimension from the Lord!! Man can plan and do all he wants, but the Lord sees all and makes the final decisions in the end. I'm glad you enjoyed this trilogy!! Best Always, Gary
