Reason's Candle
When some men fail to solve the riddle
Of how emotions rule their minds,
They’d rather look away and fiddle
With any thought their boredom finds.
Yet boredom carries far more weight
When our distress is served by wit,
Than any task—however great—
If reason’s candle’s barely lit.
Of greater worth are many men
Who come to dream what life could be
Than others scribbling with the pen
What their dim, narrow view can see.
