Fentanyl was the drug that killed Prince according to the news today, June 2, 2016.  It is a killer if abused.  There was something also said about Michael Jackson, this was one of the drugs he was abusing also.

_________________________________________________________________________

A few years ago I got sick. Real sick. Hospital sick. Near death sick. But I survived or I would not be writing this. I had several surgeries but this story is not about that. It is about the drug Fentanyl, a powerful pain killer, ten times stronger than Morphine. Yes, that is what they were giving me to control the pain. I was in the hospital six months, so you can imagine the addiction I had to this drug. The doctors were smart though, because about four weeks before I was to come home, they started the take me off Fentanyl. It was to be done very slowly, but still I had a terrible reaction. My body had got used to it and it liked it. I would thrash around the bed like a lunatic. They were only giving me small doses of it and also giving me Tylenol. (TYLENOL, I would say, that is USELESS!) The doctors kept telling me, " you do not need it anymore." (YEAH, that's what YOU think. I NEED it!) Well, after the four weeks, I came down to earth. I was free again to be me. It was then, that I realized how easy it is to become addicted to a prescription drug. oh it was dreamy lost in a haze of nothing- crashing down screaming Now years later, I am hearing on the news that people are dying from taking Fentanyl. This drug has hit the street and is killing people. They love the high, and take more than the dose any doctor would perscribe. It is a killer and must be treated with respect. To take it for a high, is a death wish. a sad funeral the teen was so beloved- it was just one time _________________________ May 30, 2016 Poetry/Haibun/Senryu/Prescription Drug Addiction Copyright Protected, ID 16-796-202-0 All Rights Reserved. Congratulations. And I think that I know now, what a haibun is. I am both medical doctor and suffered addiction. With the legal stuff it is a very fine line. This is very well written and important.

Broken Wings, congrats on your placement, I was also addicted to fentanyl along with pills. Almost died with both. Great story, glad you are well again. I too know the pain of addiction. It's terrible how the doctors throw you on such a strong pain killer then expect you to be better with just tylenol. Be blessed :)-luloo

what a way you took that theme, Constance. Wow, you had such an incredible personal experience!! I only had one pain killer in my life Oxydon(?) and I never got any kind of sensation or high from it. To this day I do not know why people are going nuts trying to find it . I needed it for pain. I used it only when my pain was bad. When I ran out after three whole months, just one bottle, the doctors would give me no refill. It made me kind of mad. Ibprofen just doesn't kill the pain.

wow, I so very much loved the senryu in the middle there. Addiction to drugs don't have to be street drugs, the prescriptions are just as bad. Your verses could stand alone, but they stand up strong together, well done.

Addicted to a prescription drug - that's scary but sadly true, as in the case of sleeping pills too:(

You described a tragic reality that many (I would say it's epidemic) face all the time. I've had friends that have gotten addicted to over-the-counter drugs, which can be just as bad as the prescriptions ... worst, in fact, because the over-the-counters are so much more accessible. An meaningful haibun, BW ... your first haiku was especially powerful. P.S. Your voice sounds different than I imagined ...

An excellent haibun, Constance! You tell a frightening story of how easy it is to get hooked on pain meds. Love, Kim
