Our New World

The gate was open for us to walk through and left for our return, We wanted to be among you and see the world we left. So many changes that we did not foresee, Growing up happens in a heartbeat. Would I have become the person I wanted to be? If I had not met someone looking like my destiny? We came out of the light, looking for a place to stay, A downtown bar with the warm smell of the south, The sign on the wall said ‘Strangers are welcome’, The smiles from within seemed to say it all. Sometimes I wish there would never be a tomorrow, We entered as strangers and soon became friends. The evening wore on and the smiles grew long, Such warmth and camaraderie was in the air. Would they take us in if they knew who we were? Or where we were going or where we had been. The moon leaked in through the windows And the dust played around in the light. Someone found their way to the piano, And gentle music played on into the night. We spoke about our many adventures, And our plans for the rest of our days. We didn’t think it was right to tell them, That we come from a place that is so far away. They asked if we had any new memories, Of our travels that we had been on so far. We told them we had sat in the mountains, And we watched shooting stars through the night. They wanted to know all of our secrets, But there are things that are locked deep inside. We planned to leave first thing in the morning, But they wanted us to tell them some more. I told them that he can stop clocks? And their faces turned from happiness to fear. They turned and looked at each other, We knew then, that it was our time to leave. We left their lives as quickly as we entered them, We were a reminder of what had gone before. Someone told us to look beyond our horizons, It’s the only thing that we really knew for sure. You see nobody ever brings anything small into a bar, And when they leave, you have to leave them impressed. But tonight was not about our discarded expectations, We only wanted a glimpse of what could have left. So we headed into the distance, our sights set for the east, We found ourselves standing at a crossroads. We turned to face each other, looking for a sign, Tell us please which path was to the future and what one was the past.
