You think that
You know who
I am
Because of the
Color of my skin
And the fullness
Of my lips
You think that
You know who I am
Because you see
My sisters’ and brothers’
On mtv
Entertaining this
Sick society
Where they praise
Glory and war
Well hear my
Roar
I am not
What you
Would define
As a
Black woman
I am the
Essence
Of the originals
I am the fear
That every
Slave owner
Politician
And historian
Feels in their bones
I am the
Mother
Of all mothers’
Teacher
Of all knowledge
The nile
Blood diamonds
Cotton pickin’
Hymn singin’
Nike wearin’
Peace hollerin’
