Not That Great
But, what if I am
not as great as you say?
What if I can’t turn
the grey sky into a beautiful blue?
What if I can’t make
the ocean waves turn?
Or paint the sky with stars
and hang up the night’s moon?
What if I can’t make
the sun emit vibrant lights?
Or turn the neverending darkness
into a glowing light?
What if I am not as great
as you claim?
What if all I can do
is step on the ground
and turn green grass
into something dead and brown?
You say I look at broken things
like I can make them new
but really baby,
there is nothing I can do.
You say you admire me,
but I know soon you’ll get tired of me;
you will look at me in the eyes and say
“You aren’t as great as they claim.”
