No Tears In Heaven

Mama cried nearly every day Depression then undiagnosed Tears shed, no apparent reason Confined to bed, embryo posed No words seemed to lift her spirits Her children thought that they’d done wrong We offered smiles, encouragement At times we gathered ‘round in song But mom responded to crisis Troubled heart offered great comfort When we were sick or dealt a blow She stepped outside, offered support The agony that she endured Took her from this world in her youth Despite the torment in her soul She loved her children, that’s the truth Now we picture her smiling down Frolicking with angelic hosts Helping as only she could do Chemical imbalance just a ghost * Dedicated to my beloved mother who always managed to find the strength to be there for her children despite her ongoing battle with depression. She died before people knew depression could be linked to a chemical imbalance.

This moving poem struck a chord with me, dear Carolyn---as my own mom has also battled with depression, but thankfully she has been able to maintain it with lithium...your title really caught my eye, and how true it is--hugs to you for this poem, your mom sure was an admirable woman!

A magnificent dedication and one that well demonstrates the inadequacy and sometime hoplessness of medicine to cope with depression they do not understand. The one constant in life is moms ability to overcome and prevail when family and children need her most. She must have been amazing.

HI, carolyn. My dad was schizophrenic and they had no meds at that time for him either. My husband is depressed. Thank heavens there is stuff to take for it, but it does not always help. Was this for the mother's day contest. Good description of what she endured here. LUv, andrea

What a tragedy. So many died so few years ago for want of modern medical knowledge. Beautiful tribute. Love Dave

Felt very sorry about your mom when reading your poetry today, Carolyn! Indeed this is very touchy! I believe that every one of us had once a certain period of depression, so sorry that your mom died before time!...Thank you for your ongoing comments to my poetry...Well written and thank you for your comments. Love, Gert

You shine a bright light on the issue of depression, Carolyn. What a nice tribute to, what sounds like, your very strong mother. May she rest in peace, and you can find strength to keep moving on. *hugs* Rachel

Wow it's amazing how much you and I have had a similar path. And the hang over into the lifes of these mothers children is tremendous. I'm really not sure the medicated society we now see is a better result but we must keep trying! Please read The Heart of Poverty. Light & Love

Oh Wow, Awesome Write Carolyn... I understand that feeling. I know many who died and did not know it was due to Depression. Back than if you said you were depressed they thought you should be put in to a mental hospital. Thanks for writing. Love You friend, Rhonda Happy Mothers Day my Friend!!!

But how does this chemical imbalance come about? Is one born with it? What a beautiful dedication to your mother, Carolyn. I hope indeed she has found peace. It must have been difficult though for you and your siblings at times. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes. Love, Caroline.

Sorry about the illness of your mother...That is really draining on all the family not just the person who has the illness...There are things that a person can do lift a depressive mood if it is not too bad...Such as exercise...Proper diet....Those things are not easy for the depressed person to do though...Keep the creative pen flowing. Good luck in the contest...Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my work...Sara

I agree with the first two comments, so sorry for your loss. We are getting the rain, 4 inches now and counting. my family just got back from PC beach and saw the pirate ship burn down. they said the weather was bad.
