Mullet Tossing Contest

Each spring in the Gulf Coast Panhandle Seafood lovers attend a festival Honoring the dark meat, oily mullet That leaps into air shaped like a gullet But the oddest part of this tradition Is the mullet tossing competition Both he-men and ladies take to the beach To see how far their mullet toss will reach So if you're beachcombing and see fish fly Now you have insight to the reason why A waste of fish? Yes, but fun’s had by all And winners dance first at the mullet ball When smoked, the mullet tastes best served with fries But it’s cool to watch when it’s tossed and flies

Congratulations on your second place win, Carolyn. I thought your poem was fun and very well written. I watched the video. Was that you in the pink bikini? (Kidding!?!) I wondered at first why you didn't include the 2008 U-tube account of the Mullet Tossing Contest. It was a great display of tossing techniques, too. A perfect celebration explanation. Perfect for the soup...that is until the last toss. I didn't know they made thongs for men...Hum! LOL Great write! Love, Dane Ann

I have passed through that area many times but did not know there was a Mullet tossing contest so close-by!... Gotta' check out those videos! (The second-to-last line has suddenly made me quite hungry too!) Another fine write as usual from you, Carolyn - Tim

what a great way to take this challenge to heart. My problem is that I do not have any fondness for my little city, and I would prefer to write of my home state Iowa, but it would be too general since we didn't have cool little things like this mullet toss you describe! I hope I can think of something to enter! LUv,andrea

Hey Carolyn, Although I'm familiar with all genres of music, I'm not familiar with Simon and Garfinkel's..and don't have access to a computer so I couldn't submit an entry..however will enter your next contest..and why are you or were you down? It takes a few days to send poems, messages via postal mail..so I'm always late... keep your pretty head up. ...Luv, Jimmy

Oh I'm glad you said fish. I had no idea what a mullet was like. Good luck with the contest and thank you for your encouragement. Skagit Valley is a beautiful area and I didn't even get around to the surrounding mountains in my poem. Love, Joyce
