Mirror of Memories

I no longer recognise the person staring back at me Reflections of my life are firmly held in the past Just a distant memory I feel so frustrated Locked in an empty world Looking back at who I used to be But the person I see is a stranger I have flashbacks of happier days Then the mirror cracks Anger Frustration These feelings rise to the surface But I don’t think anybody understands They simply nod and smile and hold my hand Contest:- Mirror of Memories Alzheimer's Sponsor:- Tammy Reams 12th November 2015

We have to treat the little girl inside you to some gifts, but the giver must be the older you. Not an easy thing to arrange. Soup mail coming.

It was incredibly hard to write this poem Duke imagining what it is like to have Alzheimer's or any form of dementia - a friend's dad suffered - I would ask after him and be told' he doesn't recognise me but he seems happy in his own little world' - simply heartbreaking for those left to remember how this person was:-( hugs Jan xx

Sure can Caleb - my mum has memory issues but not dementia - it was very difficult to write from the perspective of a sufferer of Alzheimer's:-( hugs Jan xx

It was tough seeing my father going through this Jan. Brings fear of this happening to me but I guess I wouldn't know.

Jan, Wonderful write. I don't think any one could know how someone feels unless they are going through this themselves, then I wonder how they can understand it. I believe there may be a small window during the progression of the condition when there is self recognition of what is happening to them, otherwise I believe they are oblivious to there condition.

I think you are so right there - early dementia must be so frustrating where you are aware of what is happening but I have seen it where the person is locked in their own 'little world' and it is the family that have the trauma of 'losing' the person before they have passed away:-( such a cruel disease:-( hugs jan xx

If we do not love the reflection in the mirror how can we expect others to love us as we are? Haha! Beautiful writing with a lot of profound messages, dear Jan! Good luck!

Just a tough topic, but a good poem, Jan - and I admit I wonder what people diagnosed with Alzheimer think. You made a creative and probable guess that is thought provoking to me ... CayCay

Jan, you captured the mindset of someone suffering from Alzheimer's Disease very good. I sensed the feeling of somenne trying so hard to remember who they are, and being so frustrated because no one understands. Great job! Best of luck in the contest:-) Alexis 7
