Pictures of the beheadings were too gruesome to put here...However they can easily be found on the internet....That is a picture of my brother, Armond, and his wife, Pamela. They were injured during the bomb blast that killed Prime Minister Rafic Hariri.

You put him in a cage That pilot you shot down Pour gasoline on him And set him ablaze And the world is silent... That seventeen year old girl Writhes on that soiled bed As you let all those other men Rape her after you're done She dies from the bleeding And the world is silent.... You hold a sword to their throats Ask them if they will recant Siblings, they hold on to each other Young children of a faith not your own They stand firm They won't recant And so you slit their throats like sheep Who is there to weep? And the world is silent You hold up decapitated heads then hand them to your children to hold Bloodied hair clutched in tiny hands Then you drop the heads to the ground And play football with them And the world is silent.... I will not be silent Here I stand The atrocities demand A willing hand To write A willing voice To speak To seek Justice.... Refuge.... A better way... A better life.... HOPE... Here I stand Here I speak Here I write Here I WRITE.... The world can no longer remain SILENT! Eileen Manassian It's so sad. People have such high ideals. People speak of democracy. People disparage dictatorships, but set up and fund and provide weapons for the very people who carry out these atrocities. Look at the mess in Syria. Lebanon went through war after war....I lived in bomb shelters. During the civil war bombs landed on our campus and my brothers and father had to go out during the shelling to try to put out the fires. My friend's father was killed by shrapnel...my brother and sister-in-law were wounded in the bomb blast that killed the prime minister of Lebanon. Who cares about Lebanon? THE WORLD? What does Lebanon have that is of interest...only citrus fruits and olives? Certainly not oil..... And that in itself explains so much. Look at Nicosia, Cyprus....the last divided capital in the world. Who cares? Who speaks out about occupation? Countries defend their allies....regardless of "right and wrong" The Armenian genocide has yet to be recognized by America..... These things may be far removed from many of you, but it is part and parcel of being in this part of the world. Nothing is certain...Unrest is present. Death is lurking. Puts things into perspective, doesn't it? August 10, 2015 *****IMPORTANT ADDITION Since having written this poem I have found out that the son of a friend of mine was kidnapped and held for ransom. Currently, Lebanon does not have a government and so people in the different political parties rule their "kingdoms" as they want. It is thought that these different factions have now turned to kidnapping of the rich to raise funds. Fortunately, my friend is rich and was able to secure her son's freedom. This is the reality of lie here....

this is makes me feel really sad for you, Eileen, for all those poor innocent people. I remember reading about Lebanon in Jr. High school and thinking it was one of my favorites of the mid eastern countries. to think what it has come to in the past fifty years. I am so sorry for the part my own country has had in not recognizing genocides and in providing arms. yes, death is lurking. It will come to my country too and it is very scary. AWESOME writing!!!

Dear Eileen, your poem so eloquently puts into proper perspective these sad and tragic times we live in, calling public attention to so many things that are wrong with our world. I weep for all those who have lost loved ones as a result of man's inhumanity to man; and pray that good change will come about and that this madness will end. Thank you for sharing this important message with the world. Blessings to you and your loved ones! 7 Pandita

Yes, it remind me of what goes on in Mexico with rich people being kidnapped for ransome. Sometimes the ransome is paid and the people are still killed. I'm glad your friends son is safely home.

Thank you, Kim. I'm glad that my friend's son was returned safely to the family. Imagine something like that happening? I can only shudder when I think about my 20 year old angel. I always tell her to be careful. Lebanon is not as safe as it used to be. Thanks ever so much for the visit, dear. God bless.

Demagogues rise in all countries and reason is replaced with madness. It is a brave poem Eileen, but when one voice becomes many peoples hearts can be swayed and reason restored. I support Amnesty international and would beseech my fellow poets to lend their support to this organisation, it can and does change the world little at a time. Bambi, your poem is in my favourites.“Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it.” ? William Penn

Hello, Shane....I'm so impressed by your quote. Yes, Amnesty International is a wonderful organization. We have had leaders whom we trust in this country. They have been assassinated. Please read my poem about Beirut. You will have an idea about my feelings for this beautiful city. Sometimes standing for the right means losing one's life. Not everyone can do that. Thanks for the lovely visit here, dear. Hugs

it hurts to read...and it hurts that this is happening in a world I live in...it is so very sad... powerful work Eileen, speaking out against such crazy atrocities. We cannot remain silent... we just can't. It's difficult to speak of such things. I admire your courage, and for putting a voice to this. Always, Laura

Oh...Laura. I could tell you some stories that would absolutely revolt you. Yes, it does scare me. Yes, it does make me worry about my loved ones. Fortunately I live in an area that is safe. We do have police patrolling outside the university gate. For the most part, things are good, but the neighboring strife has spilled over into this country as well. I'm glad my brother and his wife are Ok. Though their faces carry some scars, they wear them with pride. They are survivors. Thanks for the lovely visit. Hugs

This is a moving account and those of us in this part of the world have no idea what atrocities are taking place. We only hear the North American perspective. It is good that you are so passionately bring attention to the deeper realities. This is a disturbing part of humanity.

Richard, dare I say this? I really do wish North Americans knew more of what is happening in the Middle East. Unfortunately, not all news channels are unbiased. :( I could say so much, but I will refrain. There is a lot of corruption in this part of the world, but there is also corruption in other parts. Superpowers sometimes only intervene if it serves their purposes. The innocent suffer. The innocent always suffer. Thank you for being open minded, Richard. Hugs, my dear...

The world closes its eyes and denies the murders, rapes and cries Yet some few dare to speak out we need a roar of a billion shouts Innocence is now the victim caged We ALL should be mad and enraged! Super 7 on your powerful poem my friend.

Robert, I'm always pleased when you visit my work. You always leave such encouraging comments. Thank you! I am very vocal about Recognition for the Armenian Genocide. There is no time limit on the recognition of atrocities. In this part of the world...if you speak out against a certain regime, you may lose your life. May God be with those who are brave enough to speak for the truth. Thanks for the lovely visit. :)

Standing at attention I salute you for writing such a thunderous poem, unfortunately, for people that have never being through war or hardships, is difficult to conceive what you have been through or people in the area are going through! Your poem a monument of concern that should be seen by the whole world! Your poem's passion, content, power and poetic grandeur is such that few other poems could come even close to yours, Dear Eileen! I congratulate you and I am proud you my friend! 7x7!

Yes, Sunshine...that is a real picture. Fortunately the scars aren't THAT obvious. You can see them on close inspection. They are truly brave. I could send you an article I wrote about the whole experience. I wouldn't have been so brave. This country has suffered a great deal. So much blood has been shed. We long for peace. Hugs to you, my dear one.

This is a deep piece and it struggles with the feeling of helplessness and anger when faced with an ugly reality. The emotions cling to this piece like a second skin taking the reader confidentially into your thoughts through your use of vivid imagery. Emile. #7
