Like a Tree Planted By the Waters

LIKE A TREE PLANTED BY THE WATERS Though stolen, I never left you: remaining Like a keloid Etched across your healing womb. The umbilical flow of a river never Empties itself of its source. Thus I wade backwards to the genesis Of my being; And grow like a tree planted by the waters: And I shall not be moved. From my Nile and Gold Coast waters beginnings I shall not be moved. From my blackness, I can no longer be Sold. From my blackness, I can no longer be Cajoled. From my blackness, I can no longer be Ostracized. From my blackness, I can no longer be Comprised. My sable Sahara soul is indelibly free As I want to be. Like God, Africa is, and I am, like a tree planted By the waters: And I shall not be moved.
