Late August - From a Neighborhood Child

LATE AUGUST It’s late August with Labor Day on my mind Something sharp and indistinct is in the air I sense it all along my prickled skin My forehead in my hair Kids would seem to play more frantically as though to say “All is quit right after Labor Day.” Denver always has a big parade It’s really not for us Men have traded guns for overalls Tanks and silver helmets for baker’s builder’s trucks The bands are poor and few plain-shoed players not too fine The working men keep tipping hats walk in staggered lines One good thing late August brings A smell of football’s in the air A roll on churchyard grass – You’re tackled miss a pass There are a few good things late August brings To soften thoughts of school opening BUT Mother’s busy with needle and thread A trip downtown To Gano Downs The dread “Back to School Sale”

Hi Dave, This certainly brings back memories. As you know from my memoir, I loved the back to school sales. It wasn't often I got new clothes and it was a big deal for me.I going on to read the rest of the series. Love, Lainie

Many interesting and nostalgic memories here, Daver. I was born ON Labor Day itself and that's why yesterday was so special to me. it was my actual DAY, MOnday! I really liked seeing this one also for that reason! I am happy to see you back. Bring more more more poetry . Luv, Andrea

brings back memories of my own back to school days..... didn't know whether to like it or hate it. seeing friends was good and I guess that was about it.... Pop used to go downtown school shopping for 9 kids.... It was quite a haul . Now football ! that's cool. Love it to obsession so I meter it out a bit. Thanks for your poem, Daver. Just glad it's not me going back to school. Kids around these parts start August 15th! What a rip off for them!

Love the way you describe the kids playing "frantically," Daver. And those back to school sales are everywhere. Perhaps Denver is one of the few places that really celebrates Labor Day with a parade. But the approach of football season -- I'm in heaven already! Seminoles won yesterday and entered the season ranked 6th in the nation. This is what I like best about fall! Great poem, my friend. Love, Carolyn
