Kid At the Back
KID AT THE BACK
He’s trouble. I know as soon as I see him:
No hometask done; prefers to shirk,
Noisy, paper planes, - his future is dim.
“Shows no interest in his work.”
Fighting at break-time outside school.
Punishments, visits to principal.
Gives every indication of being a fool.
Seems to break rules on principle.
All is changed twenty years later:
This paramedic can save your life
After a crash. This legal aider
Can help you divorce your wife.
This manager will do your hotel booking
And can figure out an airline timetable.
This beautician may keep you good-looking
And trainer will make you fit and able.
It’s not just the brainy kids at the front -
The future dentist and architect -
But the guy at the back, the runt
That you must not neglect.
