Illusions

He loved her so. He let her know, He just couldn't let her go. Young, they met, but love, they let Last for years without regret. He cared for her, through mostly worse, But never once became deterred. He studied her, her planes and curves, He loved the more that he observed. They walked through life devoid of strife, He never even felt the knife.. She cried for him, the night grew dim, She saw their chances growing slim. He loved her so. He held her close, He just couldn't let her go. Decades went past, the moments flashed, but his pain was mostly masked. He saw her still, against his will, Gazing from the window sill. He heard her voice, a gracious noise, A helpful trick the mind employs. He drank too much, but felt her touch When his lips and bottle brushed. Through dreams she pranced, he watched her dance, In a hopeless lover's trance. He missed her so. They came so close, He just couldn't let her go.
