Again she sees those vibrant sleeves of green And hears those gentle whispers and soft sighs Alone beneath a willow lost in dreams An old woman reflects through misty eyes To see her now so deeply scarred by time A beauty once now buried in the folds Upon that road of passion left behind The bitter price she paid for growing old The park where they first met is much the same Where those two hearts she sees again entwined Engraved upon the stone that bears his name Upon her soul forever in her mind A barren stone awaits her by his side Beneath those gentle whispers and soft sighs Author: Elaine Cecelia George, of Canada Author's note: The title is from a quote of Shakespear which inspired this sonnet.

This reminds me again that we must face aging and loss as apart of life and not rebel against it in fierce thought and deed. Truly a sad but lovely presentation of one grieving for a deceased spouse and remembering youth, its glory, its beauty--its loves..A fav.. God bless.

Wow, I so could feel the old woman's heavy heart missing her love, missing the years gone by but at the same time accepting the fact that one is old now and next in line. I work with the elderly, seen emotions they go through accepting age, illness or the death of a spouse. It is heartbreaking sometimes. But I always say that we all get our turn, it is part of life. No exceptions. Thank you for sharing such intimate thoughts. Beautiful writing~

Beautiful sonnet. Reminds me of visiting my grandma's grave with my grandpa, who had his place set. BTW, I think, based on the context, that you might have meant scarred instead of scared? Congratulations!

WOWOWOW. One of the best I've seen in this contest. You know what? That was one of the quotes I too had thought of using. I narrowed it down to five quotes and finally settled on "sunshine after rain."
