Gift of Joy

You warn me that our bond won’t last, That time and space will drive away Our love, whose passions cannot stay Our lives’ injunctions once they’re cast. I lend compassion to your doubt, Though I already know full well That heartfelt ardor cannot dwell For long where wisdom’s yet to sprout. I’d rather hide this knowledge deep Within my mind and tread along, Because what binds us is a song Whose gift of joy’s too hard to keep.
