Color Blind

I never knew black because I grew up white
Raised in a town which kept them out of sight
Born of Rock-&-Roll- north of the mason Dixon line
Lincoln our state’s hero - I never understood the why
In 63- off to college I would go
To a small southern town seemingly all aglow
But words like nigger, cracker, and white’s only were new to me
I saw at first-hand how contemptuous they demean
Black’s blood runs red- like mine when I bleed
The color of southern hate was splattered on a burning cross tree
Terrible- terrible ignorant blindness I did see
I prayed to my God- how can this be
Remembering Jesus loves the little children all the time
I learned to accept the color, the man- as a friend of mine
His soul- just as precious as mine to me
Because of God I respect his creed
A world yet still color blind- but now I see

A sad time in history of our nation. I remember when they first bused blacks into our schools. I was assigned to show one of the little girls around...she was soooo scared and I felt sorry for her. We became friends and I lost some friends. This was grade, taught hate by parents and society are cruel !! I enjoyed this look into this subject in you poem. God Bless.

Hi Mark - I believe that it is the character of a person that counts. Our differences are what makes the world interesting. Appreciate your poem.

Mark, i'm not white... But, i went to a school... where the race was ONLY' white and Hispanic,, nope... no full Mexican went to that school.... that explains why I have the poorest Spanish langue.. i just recently picked up my cultural langue about 8 years and that's cause I'm 3?,,lol// well like your first few lines.. I was 11 the first time I'd seen a colored person,,, we are all precious..that is what i learned.. always..pd

It is not by choice we are born as we are, but what we do in life. This reflects upon your fellow man which determines the true fruits you bare and the color of your soul. Please forgive me if I have offended thee with my word choice. It was my attempt to give evidence and not demean any soul.
