Chance

Where do I start, this tale from my heart of a horse that came to me. Aged and worn, a spirit torn I fear this will not end happily. He is old, is what I was told Too few days left under the setting sun. Cherish his time, he has past his prime His days will soon be done. His coat I guess oh what mess was supposed to be a rich and chestnut red. It was matted and tattered It was pitiful instead. As thin a rail and just as pale A spectacle at first glance. I felt a threat when our eyes first met This horse whose name is Chance. Always on his guard, a life lived so very hard trust only a passing memory. Our journey together, will be determined by whether he and I will come to agree. As the year passed, I had to ask Is it worth all this misery? What a crime to waste my time for nothing would warm him to me. With hope starting to fade an end to this charade there has to be another way. One final try before a good bye and so it started with that very day. Thus began between horse and man a bond to be so proud of. And what was the key to this discovery? Yeah, I think you know.....it was Love. Gone from his eyes is the hate and despise, Gone the distrust, coldness and fear. To eyes that shine from this beautiful equine Anytime I happen near. From the fields in the sun, he'll come on a run with blazing adoration in his eye. A wanting as his guide to be forever by my side Under the chrystal blue Arizona sky. His breath on my face his waiting for a hearty embrace and those cherished moments lasting years. Please stay awhile I whisper with a smile He is listening, I can tell by his flickering ears. Sometimes late at night under the pale moonlight while the world is fast asleep. I will go to his stall, I don't stay long at all and this makes my day is complete. We all have that day when life leads us astray and tomorrow seems so very dim. When it happens to me I seek his company and it all disappears when I'm with him. Do you have that pal, that special guy a special gal where you take your problems and they do not judge. For me, its my horse but now you know that of course and he responds with a gentle nudge. And so my friends, this is where my tale ends and its not just some song and dance. As from the start, it is from my heart He is my horse and his name is Chance.

Hello Ms. Linda and thank you for your kind words. My poem is actually the story of my struggle for love and friendship with Chance. 2 Years ago when Arizona experienced deadly wildfires, Chance was one of the victims of that fire. Rescued, he was brought to me where the bond was born between an abused, scared and extremely distrusting horse and a man who for 60 yrs never owned, rode or even hugged a horse. I produced a video with music of this struggle at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x8mTGl_JkU&feature=em-upload_owner-smbtn Thank you again Ms. Linda
