Burning Life

I stare at the stars,
And for the first time,
I see them fly.
I return my gaze,
To my mortal earth,
And the cold warmth I feel.

I watch the green grass,
As it burns in hot steel,
The only end befitting it.
Not knowing where I walk,
I stop to contemplate the shadows,
They know me well now.

The wolf will not howl,
Even searching for his pack,
His scars run deep.
No sea to save him,
No waves to carry forth,
The beating of his heart.

The fire will dine well,
Our waste will never cease,
As nights stretch into years.
The stars have hidden away,
They’ve shut their eyes to stem their tears,
The fire is my light now.

The smoke stings my eyes,
But never blinds me,
To the haunting truth,
I’m burning life.
