Beyond Selma

My family marched peacefully in Selma that day, Hoping Martin’s spirit would lift us far away From prejudice and violence that perpetrators Had cast on us for centuries in the USA. “Land of the free,” a misnomer of limitation, For a country where whites had the sole celebration. Heads held high, we didn’t fight back, even when attacked, Knowing enmity was not God’s plan in creation. We sacrificed our King to the Civil Rights Movement, Hoping his achievements would reflect a life well spent. But hooded devils continue to rear callous heads Denying equality, our lawful, lone intent. Florida visitor Talmadge Branch was turned away; In a back room of a bar owners told him to stay. Prosecution by Florida’s attorney general Put Civil Rights violations again on display. My brothers, my sisters, we’ve yet to achieve our goal -- Too many of us in prison, slight chance of parole. Indignities abroad cause the US to lash out While, peacefully, our families we struggle to console. wow, excellently done, Carolyn. I loved the movie Selma and your title alone drew me in. I ought to write for this one. But it takes great thought and care to do it right, as you did!

Andrea, I was stunned when "Selma" didn't take the Oscar for best picture. Having seen "Birdman," I can only wonder what the academy voters were thinking.

So nice to read your verse this morning-one ole peacenik to another, glad to hear someone else take note of the current racism-BTW there are still plenty anti-semits rearing their ugly heads lately too! . Light & Love

Hurray for peaceniks! And, yes, the prejudices are not confined to African Americans. I just hope that one day the world will live in harmony, but it won't happen in our lifetime.

Very sad to hear of that doctor, Shadow. Perhaps these prejudices are not confined to the U.S. All we have to do is look at ISIS to see how far some will go.

May your words and message resonate loudly . . . we can do better, we must do better . . . any form of racism and violence must be over come.

Hi Carolyn! Having read both your poem and visited the link you provided, I can tell you how adequate this write is. Racism must always be condemned. Very well written with the required intensity. I still have to try out this interesting form. #7 love & hugs // paul
