An Enemy In the Womb
I hear your child cry everyday
In your womb, tiptoeing
Crawling, biting you in the intestines
And I wonder whether when you take delivery
Of him/her he would really be your friend or foe.
Turn, turn, turn first turn the world into
An intimate friend
You cannot live alone on an island
You cannot dance to yourself and enjoy it
All together.
Where, where, where are all the aged African drums?
Read your well- loved novels aloud
Take the balm you need to salve your woes.
Choose between good and evil
Between our Christ and the black devil,
The ruling King and the old one.
These last two aren’t enemies
They aren’t two horses
Moving in opposite directions.
