An American Thanksgiving That Might Have Been
When America was young and finding its way
They created a very special holiday
To thank their God for pulling them thru
The very long winter of frostbite and flu
Later congress convened to set out the laws
A constitution was penned for every cause
A symbol sought for both flag and bird
And Benjamin Franklin insisted he be heard
Some wanted the mighty eagle to be the one
He said “No way”, and the fighting had begun
A repercussion that could be felt to this day
If Benjamin Franklin had gotten his way
But democracy ruled, and that’s what matters
Or there’d be turkeys on coins, eagles on platters!
