After All These Years

I looked into her transformed face Fabric of the unknown years surrounds her like a thousand tears A face so pale, of ruthless gray Betrayed, abandoned by her youth Not that girl from yesterday.... and seems a ghost of someone else Our friendship born in childhood, How young, and carefree we were then She, with bright eyes, and blond hair that curled around high cheeks and rosy chin She was the one who wore a light Who's charm, and laughter I so admired The childhood where we would conspire, and dance in grass till the twilight hours Where is the face of innocence? Where is a trace of radiance? No longer there, not one small glimpse Where is the girl that I once knew? Oh, but now inside my heart I weep and want to change the course Today, our meeting here, by chance I see the toll of years that passed. In my mind, and in my dreams, she had always been The fair maiden, the one who had held my hand Two little girls who made such plans Who sat in the shade beneath the trees And in the dark we wished on stars. Those stars have vanished from her eyes, and smiles have said their last goodbyes Farewell my friend.....this time I cry ......................................................................................................

Awesome poem of regrets and the years that go by that some people allow to take the spirit of their youth. Brilliant poem and I wasn't bored at reading it. It was poetic enough to sound like a poem; but common enough to sound like a normal conversation if you know what I mean. Congratulations on your win in this contest. Much deserved.

Its so hurtful to know the hopes and dreams of someone we love and know they have fallen so short of their wants. Beautifully sad and painful. Laurie

This touches. As we get older, we find that in spite of many hardships we meet old friends whose lives were much more difficult and the years were not kind. My best friend has 23% of his heart working.. We laugh and joke around but it scares me. We were friends since we were five. God bless. Vince

This is so powerful, sad, and moving. I was lost in these moving words rushing through to see how it all ended. I especially loved the line, I weep tears for the vision I held in my heart. Very moving and touching. I am always moved by you Carrie and your heart and how it shines through your work. It shows care and thought with each work you post. I know you don't to hear this from me but continue writing and pouring your heart out, it makes for such honest and pure poetry. Thanks. Chris.

Well, our childhood memories remain strong. Life happens and sadly some people follow a long, difficult path. Perhaps the wrong path. Very sad to see someone so special to you in memory, appear so strikingly different in, shall we say, an unflattering way. Life is strange indeed the way things/people turn out after all is said and done. A sad but often true to life write. Love, Shar

Beautifully written but sad poem Carrie. I had a similar experience when meeting an old school friend through Friends Reunited; terribly sad. How true that we hang on to those images when we last saw them. Love, Nigel
