A Rainbow Glitters

For Contest: Your favorite old poem Theme: Losing A child Date Written: 1984 ----------------------------------------- A rainbow glitters in the sky. And by a wild rose, flies a white butterfly. And birds on a bough, in the early morning sing; as if from Heaven, a symphony they bring. Sunny yellow dandelions, the color of your hair. I quickly catch my breath, as if I see you standing there. In the rainbow, and the white butterfly, in the wild rose, and the birds in the sky, what is it about life, that I love so? Are you still here, Son, Did you not really go?

P.S. Paul, I got so wrapped up in this poem, I forgot to congratulate you on your winning poem as well. "Free Spirit" I wonder why those little gold medals only go from first to third place winners. Shouldn't all the winners get this, since they all won and were worthy in my opinion.

Oh, thank you so much, Paul, and especially for the 7. Because so many people have viewed this poem, but the most I ever got was a 6. Although this poem was written in 1984, it still is as fresh to me today as it was when I first wrote it after my son's death. ~~~Darlene

Thank you, Edward, for liking this poem about my son. When my two little boys were very little, I wrote another poem about a gift they gave me.. I can recall the first stanza. " A dandelion in a loving cup from two little boys who care,/ was my mother's day gift a year ago,/ I wore it proudly in my hair...."

Thanks, Cynthia, for liking this poem and for the encouragement to keep writing. The loss of a child is heartbreaking and I know others who have lost loved ones can identify with this poem and be encouraged to write their own poems. Writing poetry, among other things, is a great outlet to express emotions in a creative way. When my son was first diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. I sat by his hospital bed while he slept. I reached into my purse for a tissue to dry my tears but pulled out a pen instead. I knew immediately that God was telling me to write, not cry as an outlet to handle my grief. That night, I wrote my first poem, "Not My Son!" which was later published in Elizabeth K Ross' book on Children and Death.Blessings, Darlene

Thank you, Daniel, for your compassionate response and for reading my poems. After all this heaviness, if you could use a touch of humor, I wrote a poem today, "The Muse Alarm" unless you have already seen it? Darlene

Hi, to you also, Pandita, Thank you for your kind comments and the warm welcome. My son Gary was 13 when he died from CF. I wrote this shortly after his death, many years ago. I also wrote many poems about him: Here's another one. "God, you have so many flowers. Why must You pick them all. Daisy, my daisy, I watch the petals fall."
