A Haunting

Shadows in the late afternoon
Along the cold snow covered road
Battered white fences seclude a house
Of sprawling history in old New England
Bare spars trees stand in waiting
For the wrath of winter
As it spirals a case of gloom
Around the house it did entomb
Huddled in these four walls
And it calls from within
The harshest of stories
Leak out
The story that created fear
Making it hard to conceive
It was once known to be
The soul you couldn't see, tormented
All that came in his path
Fowl breath reached out
Into the dark
Of the house
On a old New England winter’s night
