The Silence of the Deaf

The soft sound of a brook, the bark of a dog Or the tone of his mothers loving voice These he will never know or remember In carrying this burden, he had no choice His life is accompanied by silence Each and every minute of the day But I think he hears his own song And has peace in his own special way To find ourselves in perfect silence Is something that has to be sought To tune out life's noisy distractions Perhaps a gift his deafness has brought For the "silence" contest.....

enjoyed this barbara, there is much that in noise may nullify some other sense, all is to become irrelevant in time anyway! we spend time in aquisition of many temporal things yet peace, true peace is not there.

Once again, great descriptiveness and rhyming. I can see why this one was chosen to rank among the best in the contest. Congratulations on your win. Personally, I would prefer to keep my hearing. There is a lot of noise in the world, but it makes me realize I have retained one of my most important senses.

Ohh, love this write Barbara! My best friend growing up from the time I was 6 till my early twenties was born deaf. I would tell him how lucky he was not to hear all the commotion in this world. I remember pretending to be deaf, using sign language on the bus and trains in NYC. I would translate to him all the whispers of those who thought we couldn't hear. Thank you for taking me back for a minute. Congrats on your win... Lay

We can't appreciate our senses until we meet others who do not have them. My heart goes out to this boy, dear LNC. I'd prefer to lose my sense of taste -- maybe that could be my New Year's resolution. Congratulations! Love, Carolyn

This is a great poem and our deaf boy probably has found a true silence that eludes the hearing. I find I have a noise in my ears that I cannot shut off. Probably the begining of tinnitus. I can usuall ignore it except when it is unusually quiet . Congratulations. Love, Joyce
