Promised Land

Hoist the sails and head for the west
Sail me away from this Godforsaken place
                                  Away from poverty and hunger
                                   Atlantics unpredictable anger
                                     Waves foaming intensity
Can not stop my journey towards the west
Navigate me west to the promised land
Hoist the sails and head for the west

                                                  Split yo sail
                                              I see land in sight
                                           My family I left behind
To seek my fortune in the promised land
                                     My happieness I never found
                                         The light keeps me alive
The light that never goes out
Love for the family I once left behind
Must be expelled by my survival instinct

                                         From craddle to death
                                             My fate is sealed

Just a few thoughts about how much millions of emigrants had to sacrifice for a better life.
Some managed to be reunited with their families again..while others met their fate along the way

My grandparents were immigrants to the U.S.A so I can appreciate the sentiments behind this poem. Not an easy thing to do to leave one's homeland. Keep up the good poetry Matthew Anish

We have a new type of immigration. Once they came, embracing the country with open arms. Now they come with open hands waiting for them to be filled with government subsidies. Congrats on the feature. My grandparents came from Lithuania. They taught me English only. They sacrificed much to live here, and never asked for anything but the right to stay.

Hi Arild so many promised lands are out there, trouble is the other mans grass is always greener, for some immigrants it works for others not finely written and truly inspirational as usual.

They came to WORK for a better way of life or religious freedom. They now come with their hands out to the land of the freeBIE. Our entitlement minded society has forgotten the true immigrant.

Yes, those were harrowing times for many..My husband's father's family got here when nine brothers came for Ireland..I just can't imagine that..Coming from nothing with nothing promised..Great idea for a poem..Thanks for the kind reviews of my work..Sara

wow! Arild, thank you for your comment on my poem... lol... you started your poem,, with the desire of wanting to be taken out of this GODFORSAKEN place.. in to the promise land... In my poem, i basically state the killer... sending the lonely girl..into the promise land.... Well i guess in a movie i once seen a man on a killing spree to give people a better life... (but my poem is all imagination.. I sure do like your poem very much... Adding this to my favorites... have a nice one,,, always,..p.d.
