The Sparrows Friend

The last leaf did fall,
winter clouds bring the first storm. Earth rest in slumber. Most birds have gone south. Cold winter winds staying now, sparrows search for food. Some have black and white crowns, some just two tone brown. They hide in the trees. Sun is bright, cold day, rest upon Earths frozen crust. The water is frozen. Birds seek human friends to feed and keep fresh water, with help they survive.

male red cardinal

male red cardinal rules the feed trough by strong force... nuthatcher eats seed
I was watching the birds at some food that I had placed out on a steroform plate.. A Male Red Cardinal would run all the birds away then this tiny little Nuthatcher would fly in and get one seed..The Cardinal seemed to keep watch while the Nuthatcher ate maybe five or six seeds..

(Dedication: For Dr Ram Mehta.)

Morning light
Spreads divine psalm --
Touch of zest

By this stone bench
Sleeping cat purrs --
Feline dreamscapes

That old man sits alone
Strange neighbour --
Thoughtful wanderings

Sadness in shock:
Food court bankrupt --
Ghost town feeling

Dress fitting session
Bridal gowns, smart suits --
A lovely affair

Just because
You said so --
Let it be then

Brief excursion
Nowhere near --
Beyond conflict

Open agenda
This showpiece --
Mood swing construct

Cheer wears a face
Serious as glee;
Smiles punctuate

For many hours
This wait upon --
Something new perhaps

Meal time in-between
Lunch and dinner --
Not quite the same

Gifts freely given
Notice brisk gratitude --
Thoughtful intent

Style a smile
Wait a while --
Cheer now piles

Explore fringes
Curiosity peeks --
Discovery sublime

The Fox, The Wolf, The Coyote

The Fox

with cat-like slit eyes
lurking near the hen house. . . .
meow-less creature

Chihuahua-like ears
catch a sound in the bushes. . . .
hens can rest easy

a small rat scurries
with that vixen in pursuit . . .
it’s fast-food tonight

song of the desert -
long howls declare “I am here”. . . .
mice and rabbits hide

barking dogs in threes
unlucky mice collected. . . .
live practice for cubs

yippy yippy yip
heard among those happy cubs. . .
celebration time

The Pack

the pack starts its hunt
mountains rise up before them. . .
thirty miles to go

in dark night - dog fight
one alone - tail stands erect. . . .
yellow eyes back off

wolf faces grinning
twenty pounds of meat for each. . . .
like one hundred burgers

Danger Ahead

organisms spawn
     sea heated by July sun...
          red tide comes ashore

dead fish waste on sand
    gulls peck at infected food...
        illness spreads to all

Haiku 8 - bees and butterflies, ants in action, shimmering pools

what new plant is this
flowering bees this morning
and butterflies too?

running to and fro
a group of ants in action
searching for food

bathed in the sunshine
shimmering pools of water
pulsating with life
