I'M a Dog Now
I’M A DOG NOW by JOHN M. ARRIBAS I’m a dog now I once was a tree In my other life I had no one but me But this time around I’m petted and groomed Better than pelted by a tropical monsoon I’m in a farm house where life is so sweet My owners take great care about what I eat They buy the best and most expensive food That really puts me in a jolly good mood At the beginning when I was a pup They put me on a leash afraid I’d act up Many a time we ventured out together Except for the days of inclement weather ( never had that luxury as a tree) As time went by and I became full grown The attention I got as a pup was silent as stone I wasn’t a novelty anymore I was part of the farm Guarding the house and to sound the alarm If strangers approached or smoke was detected I did my job kept them all fully protected The boys have left this life so serene One is in college, the other a marine The girl is a singer newly engaged She’s moving away to a different stage The old man died a few years ago Mama is still here but I really don’t know Sometimes she is visited by the old crew But they’ve dwindled down to just a few They don’t expect to much from me any more I go from room to room and lie on the floor I’ve been here so long I’ve seen all them grow I know that quite soon it will be my time to go I never get the option as to what I will be But I sure as hell hope it wont be a tree
